As a side note my genuine GM badged alternator from Thailand is made in Korea and I don't care , if the damn thing don't get here tomorrow I'm seriously looking at going into big debt, a nice pre loved V8 200 series is sitting in a car yard here..................it's the heat 32 deg today in Gundy, I'm really getting a bit antsy, mate is stuck in Ceduna with a buggered gearbox in his Colorado and he's not happy so when he eventually gets up to my place we might just do some shopping, leave the wives on the beach..................................argh Mr Beam is calling....

Yep it is, Holden dealer reckoned you should only tow in 4th as 5th and 6th are overdrive's, never heard such BS.

Nothing in my owners manual about that. I made sure to look when I bought our Col 7 home. After a few years as an auto transmission mechanic in a previous life I've seen a few burnt out boxes!
As a precaution, I do try to use the manual mode when towing the van on slightly hilly sections of the highways when the transmission can't decide whether to stay in 5th or 6th.

How many k's on your mates rig?

Thats the same as what I do @The escapist , my mates has only 70K on it, they are getting a new box put in, he has to wait till Mon before it arrives, sitting in Ceduna.....................I've been telling him to ignore Holdens 150,000k auto service and do it every 35 or 40K.............................new alternator for Ute arrived at 0830 and I had Big Mal hooked up and hit the road at 1130, head wind on the Newell Hwy today, only used it as I'm in a hurry, dialled 98kph on the cruise and away we went, 2700rpm, in auto and it was in 4th most of the time, sure chewed some fuel.

@Drover

Haven't been around much lately but it's about time I chipped in and said G'day.:eagerness:

I tow with our RG Colorado (auto) mainly in 4th gear when towing our full height 23.64 and its just shy of 3 ton all up on the van. We just cruise at around 95/100 when towing and we get around 17/23ltr per 100 but ours 2.8 is chipped (uni chipped) and is been pretty good so far after 4 years.

If the roads are flat and there's no wind but mostly if the temperatures outside are under 25deg only then will I shift up into 5th, most towing is done in 4th on ours and the main reason is to keep the flow of the transmission oil up and I do this to keep the transmission oil temps to a acceptable temperature around 85/90. We do have a aftermarket cooler as well which is a great help. Before that the trans temps were nudging around 110 degrease which was a warning sign hence the after market cooler.

Holden said there was no issue with 110 trans temps and I laughed at that outrageous statement. So after getting no luck with Holden we installed a aftermarket trans cooler and haven't looked back since. We also change the trans fluid every 30 thousand also and so far so good...Touch wood.

Has your friend installed a oil cooler at all? If not I would be installing one with the new trans and uping the trans oil changes as you suggest.

I know a trans specialist through work I will find out his opinion about 5/6 as a overdrive.

Yep @skippy thats about the same as me, like to keep the tranny temp to around the 90 mark, leave in auto on the flat stuff but I do it all without thinking now, with my Jeeps I changed oils the same as I do with the Colorado, not as suggested by the makers and never had any trouble, have a cooler on the bench just haven't got around to fitting it yet...........I'm getting similar fuel figures 16 to 20 and thats unchipped........Mate is starting to realize that waiting until after warranty and listening to dealers is not always advantageous........

I also reckon running temps over 105 for too long is just not good at all, changing mine at 30-40K I get a bit of sludge in the pan so hate to see how clogged up everything would be at 150K.

Glad to see you back here again Skip........................

Wow! 70k, that's what's on mine! Been towing with it for 35,000 and not changed the transmission oil.... Now I'm servicing myself I will. When I last checked fluid levels transmission colour and smell was fine. But, will change it anyway. Before I start towing the van this summer I think!!
I'd be guttered if my transmission broke....

I think the biggest thing is that while the oil probably is okay, it's cleaning out all the muck in the pan and changing the filter that makes all the diff, if you haven't big ramps or hoist it is a pain to do, I so miss my big ramps from the old place, now I only have little drive up jobs.
I change my eng oil at 10K but if on the road I will just change the filter ..............In my book it says if towing change at 70K instead of 150K.......I buy my filters in a bulk buy from Western Filters online, very economical.

@Drover its a bit of a drama installing a cooler but once done you won't regret it.

Even changing the trans oil at 30,000 the first was was a bit of a worry like you said a lot of sludge, the trans change after that was clean and had hardly any sludge at all on the last oil/filter change.

Mind you, I over change all our filters on the Colorado way before they are due.
  • Fuel filter every 10,000 is a lot cheaper than a new injector/pump/motor.
  • Trans every 30,000 only using Delco trans fluid (Dex 6).
  • Oil filter and oil every 5,000 5/30 and wanting to upgrade on the next one to 10/40 due to traveling up north at temps 35+
  • Air filter as required
  • Diffs (Penrite) and transfer case (Delco Dex 6) every 30,000 the transfer oil is usually dirtier than the trans oil I find. Our rear diff oil is alway dirty as well, keeping a eye on that one.
@The escapist I would be advising changing that oil asap and even get a trans oil cooler as well wouldn't hurt.

Planning on a big lap next year but I think I will extend the oil changes to 10,000. I will wait until arriving back in WA for the rest so I can use a hoist, its too hard on the ground as you hinted Drover.

I have 2 other mates with the same 2013 and all of us have over serviced our RG and all have had no major break down so far. One has just clicked 200 thousand and he tows a mini digger (excavator) behind and he is just about to up grade to the new RG. He doesn't want to part with the old faithful because it's been a reliable car but the accountant insists on him upgrading due to tax reasons. We all find they are reliable but it's all due to the servicing I would say ;)
