Good day all, about a year ago when I bought my new Expanda there was this massive conversation going regarding CIL Insurance not covering theft or break in for Expanda's ar Camper trailers. I ended up going to Suncorp for that reason. Well I am sure there was some feedback from members saying that CIL told them they are covered. Well I just got off the phone with CIL as I am in the process of renewing my license and once again they told me there is no cover for theft or break in if any part of your external walls are canvas!!!!!!!!!
Does anyone have anything in writing from CIL saying that you are covered for you theft and breakin on your Expanda?

Hi Pieter

I got there policy document about a month ago and it states in it that a to be covered you must have hard walls and canvas are not hard walls.

For the same reason i went with Suncorp and they were cheap that the CIL quote anyway.

I also check with RACQ and they are the same no coverage for canvas.

Yah Duncan, I had this fight with CIL last year. But one of the members "Stray Dingo" posted that he had written confirmation from CIL that they do cover Expanda's for theft etc. They said if I can show them this written response from them they will reconsider their policies. They don't mention all this crap to you when you take out the insurance, they even talk people into lifting their content cover, which they don't cover!! Just wanted to bring it to everyone's attention again as someone will be stuck with a claim not being paid!!

I had both my previous campers with MHIA (Manufactured Homes Insurance Agency), no problems with canvas.

When the Panda arrived, I got a quote from MHIA but decided to bring all my insurance to one place NRMA now off to double check the policy again.

Check it for me too. I'm with NRMA.

We're about to purchase a 16.49.1OB and have spoken to RACQ since they insure everything else in our world. They've indicated that the van is covered provided door & zippers etc aren't left unlocked. What they've said isn't covered is anything under the annexe or awning.

Welcome to the forum mrhappi.

I will be putting a call into CIL tomorrow and depending on response, may be moving to a new insurance company.

Mrhappi, I spoke to the underwriters at racq last year when we got our new van ( you need to go beyond the sales people). They deemed that entry via the canvas ends was not considered forceful and therefore not covered under theft. They did say you could apply under special consideration and they would review it and determine if they would cover it or not but I needed to know before the event. We are with suncorp despite it costing $760 pa for piece of mind.

You need to read the product disclosure documents not what the sale guys are telling you. Ask to speak to the underwriters.... They determine if they'll pay a claim.

Also, don't forget there are a lot of otherways to lose your conents other than theft (fire, accident, flood etc) do upping your conents with companies still makes sense (saying that, ours is with our house content insurance as long as we aren't away for more than 60 days)

Yeah I've read the PDS & it talks about the 'forceful' entry thing and excludes the annexe. I reckon if someone has popped your canvas ends to gain entry it would be an interesting discussion to prove otherwise.

The racq underwriters didn't deem entry through the canvas as forceful. Most companies we looked at didn't either.

welcome mrhappi,
My understanding is that most wont cover in the annex, or canvas but as long as its in the van proper its covered up to the $ limit, i suppose thats a grey area for Panda's and pops too given the bed situation? i only hear fairly good about CIL and i moved there from AAMI as they were better priced and covered to a higher value.
Can someone cmfirm what the actual policy is? its a worry for all panda owners if we thing we are covered and we are not.....
Cheers

Hi folks,
The timing of this thread couldn't have been better for us, was planning on ringing around for insurance Wednesday or Thursday in time pick up on Friday. Wouldn't have thought to ask about entry through the bed ends. Did note on the CIL website they talk about optional annex cover, was planning to ask about that also.
Will certainly be going into enquiries tomorrow forearmed with a few extra questions.

Thx all.

Jas

Hi Pieter,
We have only had our new panda a couple of weeks and when going through and getting quote's from insurance company's, CIL would fully cover the van when closed but not with the ends down or canvas exposed, we ended up going with RACV agreed value and doesn't depreciate !
Cheers Glenn
