So I have just bought a 2009 XR6 FG falcon that had only done 84000km and it already had a 2300kg rated hitch release towbar fitted.

I also pulled the trigger on a 2nd hand 2010 jayco expanda 16.49.1 in immaculate condition. I hope to pick them both up within the next 2 weeks. I cent wait and thanks for everyone's suggestions.

thanks. yea I cant wait to get them back home. I have already started to think about mods and my first trip.

I would like to add a toolbox and will need to move the spare either to the back or id prefer under the van if possible. Any thoughts on the best way to go about this? The van is a 16.49.1 model.

the falcon looks sexy as - but you may want to get hold of heavy duty suspension
I know the Ford will have the "towing pack" fitted from standard, but good quality air shockies will help

dont forget to get the Brake controller fitted - lots of people going for the Redarc Tow Pro

easy to move spare wheel to the back - just need to change the rear bumper from tube to RHS

it looks like the standard Draw Bar - a box can be fitted - just be aware of the corners when reversing is sharp angles

Ah. The plan implemented very well by the look of it.

As BigCoooool said, check the bum on the Ford when hitched....or before you hitch...and suss out a beef up of the suspension.

(Ours looked fine, felt fine with a new Patrol but we noticed a gradual subsidence in the bum....the car that is....so had air bags fitted. Problem sorted ...and safer.)

Shame about the wallet.

Are you Brisbane Northside? If so, I can recommend BandB at Brendale to do the tyre relocation. Though it looks like a bigger job than ours. We spray had the heavier rear bar.

Congrats on going for a safe and sensible solution rather than hope for the best.

I'm located on Brisbane southside. As this is all new to me. Can someone explain why I need to go to the trouble of changing the shocks in the car. If it's rated to tow 2300 and tow ball weight way more than the van plus payload is it needed? Seems like I have just joined a bottomless pit of spending more and more. I'm sure it will be fun and I can't wait but are all these things needed?

Basically standard suspension on most cars are a compromise and are more suited to no load. Even though its rated to carry xxx amount of weight does not mean it will suit it as well as beefing up the rear, if you plan on doing more then just a short trip here and there. Airbags are a good option on some vechicles as mentioned above.

You may also find the actual ball weight different to whats on the plate. From personal experience I had a d40 Navara with standard suspension and I thought it towed fine. Now with a px Ranger and a custom aftermarket suspension it tows 100% better. Both cars are rated to tow 3500kg (sort of) but the Ranger handles towing so much better then the d40 and I put that down to spending the money on setting up the suspension. Its also a few hundred kgs heavier which helps but if you plan on towing any great distance I would say its money well spent.

The manufacturers fit soft suspension to vehicles so it feels nice and while they are rated to carry X amount, the suspension will slowly sag till you drag your bum on the ground, thats why everyone upgrades their springs/shocks etc also you will be surprised when you add things up how little of that 2.3t cap is left after you load up.........................I won't mention that the low profile tyres might annoy you after a few trips.
There's a few threads on here fitting spares underneath and on the rear bar, I fitted mine underneath on my old 14 as dropping it down all the time was a pain........

Congrats on the new setup @nihonjin, it looks great.

There are many knowledgeable people on the forum who can dispense good advice in a non threatening form and it appears you have taken some of that advice. I look forward to seeing more pictures and reports from your trips with then new van. Get out there and enjoy.
