Sitting in van near Cowell on the Eyre Peninsula at the moment, blowing a gale and a somewhat undesireable temperature outside. Toasty warm inside with diesel heater idling away consuming minimal fuel, just as it's been doing since leaving Alice some 5 days ago and tank (10litre) still 1/3rd full. Run for a few hours each night before going to bed and then wife turns it on again about 4am. All 240V free camping, solar & 2x100ah AGM's.

I was thinking of something more portable like the butane or gas heaters but are they safe in enclosed areas like the van

A big "NO NO" on the butane gas heaters for inside the van.

The diesel heaters or the LPG gas type from Truma is the way to go. I

I will be installing one of these options before next winter, was meant to go in from factory which would have been more practical, but didn't work out that way.
