OK I will just plug the HDD into the TV
But if I was going to do it so everyone could access anything (Except Dave's old Porn Movies)

I would get one of these

You have the freedom to access your files wherever you go with the Seagate Wireless Plus 2TB Portable Hard Drive. As the hard drive is battery powered, you can take it with you anywhere and access your data through its WiFi.
  • You can take all your files with you while you are on the go thanks to the large 2TB of internal storage.
  • Conveniently stream your media with up to 8 tablets, smartphones, Macs and PCs.
  • The Seagate Wireless Plus 2TB Portable External Hard Drive can stream up to 3 HD movies to 3 different devices at once and can stream low-bandwidth content to up to 8 devices at the same time.
  • Enjoy the portability and the flexibility with up to 10 hours of battery life.
  • It comes with free Seagate Media app for iOS, Android®, Kindle Fire and Windows 8/RT.

And if you TV does not have USB (or cant play movies) I would plug one of these into the HDMI port

NoWorries that seagate drive only supports 3 connections at a time - Family of 7 that aint gunna cut it.
That said I like the simplicity all be it for alot more coin than the cheapers options :p

As for the compute stick - What a great idea these where, we trialled a few @ work, and they were the most useless P.O.S (No not point of sale) for example - Running wifi and bluetooth together at the same time lagged the machine so much you had to turn off wifi to get it to work right (The keyboards we used were bluetooth)

But again - They're awesome ideas for simplicity

yeah it can be a bit hit and miss sometimes @davemc, lots of new updates recently for it with the release of the new Apple TV as it is also a app on that now. the old Mac's could be put to good use the screens on those things even the old ones are still really good, I am sure any of the streaming clients would work well, just need some 12V options as I assume the batteries would be cactus.

Holy crap!

I failed the ePub challenge but got it working with iPad, not Samsung.

All the rest is absolutely double Dutch to me even though I worked in computers for years.

I guess I couldn't give a monkeys about the new stuff. It's not even an intellectual challenge.

Sorry!!!

Why on earth do you need all that stuff if you want to go camping?

That's what we got @NoWorries . Unless the movies are MP4 you need to have vlc to play them though. I did try converting them, but the quality became crap. I just don't like how our sphere tv's don't recognise it, so we are stuck bringing another 2 hd's with us .

raspberry pi + portable hdd = ability to play almost any video you can put on the hdd. No more converting required. Although you dont get wifi with that solution. lol

Think I said it before WiFi hotspot solves the internet blues, 10gb = $60/mth, movies all on 2tb HDD plugged into laptop which plugs into TV via HDMI had a couple of gizmo's which were supposed to do the same job but they were a pain, laptop easier and can put the computer on the screen as well.

@Crusty181 , when you say it supports up to 5 devices I assume that you are talking hard drives?? We have the seagate wireless hard drive and have the same problem as @davemc where it either plays wirelessly or if it gets plugged in to the tv, it loses the wireless capabilities. (Also found it won't play the movies......bummer..... so have to take the other hard drives.) not quite sure on my thought processes with this, but wondering if the seagate could do the job of the WD??
The EDUP device allows 5 phones, computers, tablets etc to access the connected hard drive at the same time ... at $20, is a pretty cheap solution. Mine works like a dream. No batteries to charge, just leave it plugged in to any USB socket and its good to go 24/7. The EDUP creates its own wifi network that any device can log into. The WD (Western Digital) Live media player is a $100 media player you plug into the TV. You generally attached by USB cable your hard drives, so you can watch movies from the hard drive. The bonus in this EDUP setup is the WD Live will also connect to the EDUP network and stream movies from the EDUP's connected hard drive, straight to the TV via the WD Live .... all whilst the kids are watching whatever on the iPods or tablets also from the same EDUP hard drive. You just leave it plugged in, in the van, all the time, and your tribe can access it in a whim anywhere within a circle around the van including the car (even on the move) ... no further setup or input from you

(I think my graphic is better than @James Clark's. That EDUP in the pic looks almost real. Im not actually a graphic artist although you could be forgiven for thinking so)

My only succes had been to set up the Edup for iPad but I'm thinking someone said it would only work with a USB flash up to 8gb.

Will it work with something larger? A 500 gab HD?

Now I'll have to find the damn thing after consigning it to a safe place in sheer frustration.

And my second question (now I've stopped being grumpy about technology) is what format /s do movies have to be to work from either a lowing capacity Flash drive or higher capacity HD?

If I can get this to work by streaming my movies (or recorded TV shows) to our iPads I'll be delighted and stop being grumpy!

So many questions, and such a small attention span

Any ebay shop in particular you got it from? @Crusty181 ????
The ebay HongKa'nese seller is a "kaamart" Item is here

my fusion setup in my van has a D-link router connected to it maybe I just need to connect the hard drive to that ?
If its a "cloud" router, thats what i had setup before. I used my Dlink house internet wifi router, but I had to find a 12v lead to use it on the move. The EDUP has an IOS and Android App which makes it pretty simple.

But will it catch fish @Crusty181 ??
No, not a single one ..... so its in some pretty esteemed company ... ey @Drover. It will be the sad little device sitting on the pier next to you staring out to sea

My only succes had been to set up the Edup for iPad but I'm thinking someone said it would only work with a USB flash up to 8gb.
I suspect that someone guessed 8gb ..... Im using a 1TB usb3 Transcend Storejet

Now I'll have to find the damn thing after consigning it to a safe place in sheer frustration.
Its in the back room, under that book which explains in detail @Drover's fishing mistakes (he'll need that back ... quickly) ... which in turn is near my $100 note (Ill need that back too)

And my second question (now I've stopped being grumpy about technology) is what format /s do movies have to be to work from either a lowing capacity Flash drive or higher capacity HD?
The EDUP has its own IOS and Android App. The "EDUP WiFi Disc App" only streams so it doesn't open any files itself, it loads whatever appropriate App you have on the device for that file your opening. Theres a couple of formats the EDUP doesn't prompt, that I have Apps on the tablet for ... buts its unlikely you'll be using those file formats anyway.

Via the streaming EDUP, my tablet opens WMV M4A MP3WMA XLSX XLS DOC DOCX JPG PDF PPTX GIF PNG M4V MKV 3GP FLV .... is that enough ???

If I can get this to work by streaming my movies (or recorded TV shows) to our iPads I'll be delighted and stop being grumpy!
You smile is next to my $100 ..... which is next to my smile

You can also download and upload directly to the hard drive via the EDUP network. i.e. back your photos and videos etc. Although I use a different device (see below. sorry James), same principle as the EDUP, Ive loaded all the manuals, warranties, invoices, insurances etc for the van onto the hard drive etc
