Which fridge?

Hey guys, my wife and I have just signed up for our new 16.49 1b outback and I'm loving this forum. I've got about 1 million questions to ask although this one relates to our fridge choice. We wanted a big fridge but not a 3way. We are getting a 12 volt/240 weaco 110 ltr fridge due to it hopefully working better than a 3way when out in the bush. Has anyone else had/have the the weaco 110ltr and what are your thoughts about it? Do you think the 110 ltr over the 3way 150 ltr is a good choice given that we will probably spend more time out in the bush rather than powered sites/caravan parks.
Any feed back welcome.

Thanks

I have to ask, how are you going to power the Waeco? A couple of bigger batteries and solar? Generater?

We have the 150ltr 3 way and not a problem

We have the 150 L 3 way fridge on ours and we camp with no power
And the fridge works great on gas . My experience with a large 12 v fridge
Is you will need heaps of battery's or a genarator to keep it running
I have wired a few up on motor home's.
240ac and 12 dc and we needed about 400ah so 4x 100 amp battery's = about 180kg
Just some food for though !!!!!

I was camping with a mate and his camper trailer last week. He has a waeco (I dont know how big) running off 2 100 amp hr batteries, a genie and solar panels. He does a lot of bush camping. I showed him my 150L 3 way and explained the pros and cons. Basically his opinion (not mine as I have never had a waeco) is that he will go for a 3-way in his next upgrade (he's after a van) as it is so much more efficient on gas. He was complaining that the waeco was so power thirsty. He reckons a compressor fridge might be the way to go if you are always on 240V, but 3 -way is better off grid. I agreed.

Hi cj1177, we really wanted to install the weaco 136 ltr 12/240 fridge but jayco said they only deal with 3fridges now (90, 150 & 110 in 12/240).after hearing this we got rattled as we really wanted something bigger than the standard but 12/240. My wife would love the 150 3way although we've been told by friends and even some dealers that the 3 ways can struggle more so on gas. This is our first venture in buying a caravan and I've been told a million does and donts.
So what I would really like to no is.... Do the 150 3 ways handle themselves ok or do we just go for a slightly smaller option in a weaco 12/240. My understanding was that the 12/240 will draw less power on 12 volt than the 3way will on 12 volt????
We have to confirm or final order by the end of the week...... Not sure.

Any advise from anyone would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Digger

Hi Digger
I have a expanda with the 150L 3 way fridge and we have used it on gas when away with no power and it works great.
The only thing I would say is you do need a digital thermostat with a read out on the outside of the fridge so you can look at the temp and not rely on the adjustment on the fridge.
The fridge has a 1 to 5 adjustment on the front and it seems to work different on gas,240ac and 12 v dc.
The only time you would run it on 12 dc is when you are driving to keep it cold . I also have two waeco,s a cf50 and a cf35
That I don't take away because the fridge works so good in the caravan
The only time I take one of the waeco,s if we are doing a large trip and use it as a drink fridge as we have two kids that eat like a small army .
And as my last post you would need a large battery bank to run the large waeco I have put a similar fridge into a mate,s motorhome as i am a electrician i have done a power usage on a few 12v fridge,s and he wants to put a fridge in like my caravan.
And be careful about the power usage of some 12v/240 v fridges as they seem to miss calculate the power usage on 12 v
As we found out on my mate,s. fridge when we measured the current draw on the fridge.

Hi mate. I will offer my experience to you for what it's worth. We have taken my parent's sterling away a couple of times and it has the 3way 150L dometic. I can tell you that it works great on gas. As long as you don't overfill the fridge. Can recommend it mate. We are going with the 3way on our 16.49.1b.

All the best mate.

Cheers.

Thanks guys. I'm really considering changing to the 150 3way now. We are getting 2 9kg bottles with our new set up so it should last ages when out in the bush.

Thanks everyone, very helpful

I think my 150 works better on gas than 240/12. And the beauty of them is that its simple old fashioned technology.

Hi Digger,

There's 100 Do's and Don'ts :)

I always find the magic rule is to get it cold before we leave when plugged in and then the gas is just keeping it cold. My parents have the 150 3-way and it works great in thi environment (240V or Gas on site). It gets a hiding too as there's a constant rotation through 30 cans so it's constantly being opened!!!

I've just gone for the 150L 3-Way in our order.

Cheers,
Rob

How often do you need to empty drain bowl at rear lower of fridge???

It is accessed via lower grill. Found ours full with a bit of spillage, guess need to remember to drain once packing up prior to moving on. Pace.
