I have just been reminded how important it is to get yourself checked for skin damage from our sun. Two years back I asked my skin care specialist about a pimple type thing on my lower lip. He just sprayed it with the usual freeze stuff. A year later it was showing up again so I saw a different skin care doc. His opinion was that it was nothing, just scrape it occasionally and it would be ok. Two months ago I asked my own GP about it and his response was “not my field, I will send you to a dermatologist.” He promptly organised me to have a biopsy which showed it was a ‘squamous carcinoma’ and needed to be fully removed and sent me to a plastic surgeon.
End result was today I had a 12mm wedge removed from my lower lip so it is now 12mm shorter than it was yesterday and my rugged looks are now more rugged.
I am told the swelling should settle down in a couple of weeks but next week all the stitches come out so one more thing to enjoy. I asked the doc how many stitches he used but he wasn’t counting. I told him it felt like he was making a tapestry.
Just get yourself checked guys before things get to serious.
