Hi all

I need advice today we tried to see if the jayco expanda 16.49.2 we just brought would fit under our roller door. It is going to be a very tight fit.
So far my idea's are to raise the door mounting points as high as i can, which will be about 2.5inches. The caravan dealer has suggested i use a ratchet style jockey wheel to jack the front of the van up as much as possible and then lever it in. I have also thought about letting the tyres down a bit aswell. Any advice would be greatly welcomed.

Maybe a solution

Hi Borstalboy

Good choice of van. I had a similiar problem wanting to keep the van undecover and out of the weather. I posted last year for some solutions which helped in getting my mind ticking.

Here is the solution. I had to fit my van in a normal double garage with an opening height of 2130mm and my driveway has a slight slope downwards towards the house I needed at least 100mm clearance. I tried letting the tyres down by

half the pressure this only gave me 30 to 40mm still not enough. I though about talking bricks out and moving the door but too costly.

How I solved the problem: Firstly I purchased a rachet jocket wheel which allows the van to be brought down the driveway safely and move it around the driveway and in the garage. Secondly I puchased a pair of 15

inch landcruiser rims $50 each off ebay put some hose and gaffer tape around the rims to stop scratching of the driveway. Then I swapped the rims and commenecd the process of putting the van in nose

first so the drawbar protrudes from the single garage door at the rear. Once the nose is in I swap joackey wheels which is probably what you will have to do to allow the van to fit under the doorway.

The van gets stuck in the drain so I then use a small 4wd rachet winch to pull it into the garage. This gives me about 150mm clearance inside the garage and allows access to the van.

I will attempt to post some photo's.

Goodluck.

Your idea of usinf rims without tyres is a lot cheaper then buying storage wheels at $450 a set. I think i will definitly check the stud pattern then head down to u pull it and pick up some cheap rims. I also will be using a ratchet style jocking wheel.

Hi,

New to the forum, we are looking at buys a expanda as well, how much height were you able to save ? THis might be the difference between a van with a toilet and shower or not ?

Any assistance would be great !

Thanks

Thanks Pace,

We've looked at the specs, looking at the 16.49-3 which has a height of 2380mm, my garage is 2230mm so I need to drop it down (from standard). With changing the wheels, how much were you able to reduce the height?

the 16.49-1 has a height of 2255mm which I can get through dropping tyre pressure.

Reds ... That is a close shave!
Hi Hubble80

Yes is close shave, I need the wife and two kids to watch the clearance. Its easier to get out. I just push it back then hook up a snatch strap and pull it up the driveway.

Its takes about 45 min to put it in and 15 to get it out. Which is quicker than taking it to a storage facility and its out of the weather and secure.

Geeez Reds....
Putting the van away for the first time must have been interesting.

Yes the first time was touch and go. I had a few helpers and some of the neighbors were amazed it went in. However, I was confident with my measurements. Like most things were's there a will there's a way.

Cheers

Hi Fabulous

By changing the rims I was able to get just on a 100mm. Mine fits in with about 20mm to spare but that's due to downward slope of the driveway.

If I put storage wheels that I can get on eBay I reduce around 90mm. Food for thought. Cheers

We are off to Jayco in the morning to have a look

Hi Fabulous

Just be careful with those storage wheels, they may not fit. I remember some time ago someone on the forum bought a set and they didn't fit. Also the guy at Bayswater Jayco Parts Shop told me they wouldn't fit. Mine is a 2011 van, they might fit the new ones?

Thanks. The guy we spoke to at seaford said they would. I told him the model we were thinking off. Anyway. Still have heaps of questions for the knowledge base so might start my own thread ! Sorry to hijack the thread.
