I've been watching the various bike rack threads here with interest as I want to put some on my soon to be delivered 17.56-2 OB. Ideally I want to be able to carry 5 bikes, so am thinking I will need racks front and rear (but will live with 3 if I have to). The bikes aren't the expensive serious kind so am not worried about stone chips etc

I am thinking of this for the rear, and something like @Zammm's brilliant front rack mount, but am seeking advice...

-does anyone have that rear mount? I've seen posts here for the round bumper bar version which looks a bot sturdier as it connects back to the chassis; this one just bolts onto the bar. If someone has this one I'm keen to know if it does the job?
-for the front, does the 17' have the same centre rail that @Zammm's is bolted to on the 16'?

Thanks

G'day mate, @hamish22 has one of those brackets for the rear bar, I'm sure he will let you know what he thinks! If your interested I can supply, slightly different in design but stronger and cheaper. What you need to be careful of is how the bar itself is mounted, Jayco did not design the rear bar with holding bikes in mind, I'm not saying it will fail but I wouldn't guarantee it!

Cheers.

Hey @benrosenick

As @Burnsy said I have the rear bike plate for the square rear bar.
Nice and solid, well put together and easy solution.

If you need one, contact @Burnsy for more info, a great bloke to deal with!
A cheaper solution and is a little different to the other similar one but very strong!

You can see a pic of mine in this thread, bottom of page 2!

Thanks @hamish22 - always good to go off a recommendation!

That one looks like a copy of this one

But not quite as good quality. Also the trailmax one includes shipping Aus wide.

Hi @benrosenick ...thought I'd throw in another idea for you. A bike rack on your hitch with four bikes. Sometimes we take all six bikes, so I put 2 on the roof of the cruiser

Bike rack & Tool box.JPG

As Burnsey said above, check your rear bar is strong enough to carry a rack with 3 bikes bouncing down the road. My Jayco dealer told me it was rated to 35kg!!! I stood on my old bar a few times and it never fell off...and I weigh more than 35kg!!!!!

Thanks @JASA, my concern with the carrier on the car is the Prados side hinged door-I assume it would be difficult to access with the bikes on the rack.

I'm in two minds about the reinforcement needed for the rear bar, I think I'll have a look when I take delivery (next week!) and see how many bikes I'm confident to put out the back without strengthening it.

Cheers, Benrosenick

Thanks @Ligedy - what did you do to reinforce the rear bar chassis mount?
Installed steel plate / packers between the bumper bar RHS arms and chassis RHS to take out the vertical movement.

You will see the original bumper RHS section is not at tall as the chassis RHS so the bolts don't pull it all together as good as it could be. The steel packers allow the bolts to pull it together hard without deforming the chassis tube.

Your right @benrosenick I have zero access through my rear doors when the bike rack is on. If I need anything out of the Waeco I just send in the kids through the side doors :). I did think about mounting them on the rear bar, but wasn't really comfortable with that idea. Having said that, I have replace the rear bar to carry the spare wheel. The new bar is welded to the van chassis and will take the weight of four bikes and the rack comfortably

Ive just bought the one for the rear bar and it goes on easy, but wondering with the bike rack I have bought that it states when fitted I must connect a strap within 30deg of horizontal back to the vehicle for extra stability.

My question is - is that necessary and if so has anyone done it as there is nowhere I can see to connect it apart from mounting some sort of bracket on to the van roof?

My update on this - its in a separate thread, but I have the @Burnsy rear bar mount with some strengthening, and have a plan for the front mount (@Zammm's design).
