Hi guys,

After some advice here. I am looking at purchasing a decent all round gps, one that does well in the cities yet can also help me out when off road for a little 4wd action.

Can anyone share their experiences with their models please,

Cheers,
Ben

We have a TomTom. Found it much easier as you start with suburb, then street then number. Once you start typing the suburb letters, the list comes up, same for the streets. We found with some satnavs if you didn't know the correct spelling of a street, you weren't able to look it up.

My GPS is a Tomtom included in an HP PDA which carries all my addresses and phone numbers, can run Word and Excel, does currency and other conversions and many other functions. The GPS is only a small part of its options but I bought it because it also had maps of UK and Europe and we were just heading there at the time. It is about 5 years out of date but still does the basics. It can run Ozexplore but I have not tried it as yet as I am still thinking about a larger built in system.

I run a Tom Tom App on my iPhone, its pretty rubbish all round even in the city where it should be good.

In the bush i use maps, maybe thats why i get lost a lot. I looked at the Navman MY85XLT the other day, looks pretty good value.

I have an iPad for work and am thinking of the VMS or Hema App, would love some feedback if anyone has tried this particular method.

We use a small laptop with OziExplorer, all I can say it's fantastic.

Pictures below are of our old 15" we now run a 10" for more dash space, the screen shot of the yellow car is our position.

We are running a Garmin Nuvi 1450. 5 inch screen in our car. Works well and has Auto shut off and auto start up which was the major selling feature.

Thanks guys, I settled on the MY85xlt, $214 at JB and $35 or so for the hema upgrade after discount for registering. They are not topographic but will have me covered. The laptops do look impressive mounted though, if my iPad was the 3G version that would be tempting also.

I got this:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/GPS-Mits...=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3cc45ceb09

Has normal road mapping, plus ozi explorer (at no extra cost if you PM me I will give you the instructions :spy:) Has the reverse camera ( which i wired into a relay so I have the panda cam on there also) Have a roof mount screen which is in the second zone, so the kids have IR headphones and we have the Navigation and music through the cars speakers.:drum:

Different models for different cars too.

You don't need a 3G Ipad if you have an iphone... just turn your Iphone into a personal hotspot (under settings) = Cheaper Ipad and 1 data plan.

Yeah I do that, in fact doing it right now, however that wouldn't help when the phone is out of range, it can't transfer a gps signal to the iPad can it.....can it?

Correct me If I am wrong but.... The Ipad 3G ipad has assisted GPS which asists the in built GPS location by using triangulation from Cell towers. I am not sure that the WIFI Ipad has a GPS chip.Have you tried the maps without a WIFI connection at all?

But to Answer your Question above... YES! using the app below:

I have a similar unit and was going to hook the Panda camera into the AUX video in. Can you ellaborate any more on the relay? Does it give you other advantages?

ok... Sorry its so crude, it was done quickly in between yelling at the kids to eat their dinner.

Cam Wiring.png

In you didn't want to be able to turn it on whilst driving (have no idea why) just get rid of the first relay.

If you have any questions or have found an error, let me know.

Cheers,

*****Please Wait.... I have made a mistake, I need to add 1 more contact in there for the Video switch, I will update tonight.*****

You will have to find a relay with an extra contact, or you could possibly either the 12V +ve cables together and switch the video or Visa Versa. I used some relays with multiple contacts that I had lying around. It works great!!!

Hi Bigman
I've only just stumbled across this post. Somehow I missed it first time around! Thanks for putting in the effort and drawing this up.

I pick up the Van next week and this will be one of the first things on my list. I've had a quick look at the diagram and it is a little over my head. I'm sure I can wire it up but I'm not sure I fully understand what it does. When the time comes to do the job I'll have a closer look and perhaps ask you a few questions.
Thanks again
