Ulverstone Apex Caravan Park

Ulverstone is about half an hour from Devonport, so we exited the boat and headed there for our first stop this time. There are two sections to the park - one with a formed loop road and site all neatly placed etc, camp kitchen and rec room; and one on Picnic Point, grassed, no road as such, old amenities. We had the grassed area so I can't really comment on the other part. If I understand it correctly, APEX parks were started by Apex and non profit, so tend not to be as well equipped as the Big 4 down the road. I'm not sure if it is still Apex per se or privately run now.
At the time we were there, there were a lot of long term vans, meaning both weeks at at time, and been coming for years. One lady said her parents used to take them there, now her grand kids are there! Although grassed, the sites are still all powered and sewered etc, its just a bit more informal in layout. We had a site slap bang against the amenity block, so got to listen to the toilet doors banging and the (ladies') conversations . No big worry, but some ladies do get loud when on the toilet
.
I think there was a camp kitchen there, but we didn't use it, so not really sure…
The toilet block is OLD and in desperate need of an upgrade (preferably knocked down and rebuilt). There were only two cubicles and three showers (Mens) and there was a short wait a few times. but water pressure was good and when the hot water was working, there was hot water (I think just the ladies missed out a bit). Being on the beach, it is keyed access.
The park is pet friendly, and plenty of room for them to run, and there is easy access down on to a swimmable beach. Come sunset, the little perguins are aplenty in the bushes around the park. Staff was very friendly and helpful, even with arriving late from the boat. The freight trains run past the park at any time, so the 2am run might awaken even Rip Van Winkle
Overall though, very quiet - even on New Years Eve - the party was at the other part, and all the old farts like went to bed.
Again, we had no illusions what to expect, but it was a very pleasant spot to stay and would happy stay there longer again. I think it was just $30 a night, and no extra for the kids, and $20 dep for the toilet key.
On the straydingo scale - a happy 4.5/5 as to what we expected, and probably a 2.5/5 compared to a typical Big 4. (but they don't have penguins)
