That will happen whatever the connection method, if you don't fit an isolator or solenoid to cut the battery off when the ignition is turned off.

You probably need to talk seriously to an auto electrician about what suits you and get it done right from the start so you avoid all those issues.

As I understand it, the dealer's responsibility is to ensure all connections from the 12pin supplied actually work.....and all dealer's will organise an auto electrician to make any changes requested / ordered but at your cost.

Hi

"Jayco told us it would void the warranty of the fridge and battery if we changed to an Anderson" the local Jayco dealers here in WA changed mine to a Anderson telling me that it was much better.

"They said it's because Anderson has more voltage of thick wiring then the 12 pin that could blow up the fridge and battery" this is very unlikley unless you have a very old car that has a alternator that will pump out massive voltage (im talking very old car)
Yes a Anderson will allow more amps through and because of the thicker cable less voltage drop but that voltage will still not be enough to kill the Setec or the Fridge,
The max input of Voltage that the Setec will handle is 14.8 volt, most current cars put out 14.5 max these days.

Also if you have a Gas/Elect fridge the cabling from the main plug does not go to the Setec anyway a smaller cable does so changing it to a Anderson will have no effect on the battery system.

ps: what Vehicle do you tow with and is your fridge Gas/Elect or a compressor type (elect only)

Thanks for your reply Doc. Can I ask why you changed to a Anderson?

Hey mate,

My vehicle has one of those 7-pin plugs with a reed switch included (for disabling reverse sensors etc when a trailer is connected). Plus, I already had the 50A socket in place from a previous van. It was easier for me if the dealer changed the plug arrangement on the van to match my car (which they were happy to do).

I don't use an Anderson plug, I use a different style...

http://www.ktcables.com.au/product-category/trailer-plugs-sockets-2-pin

But the outcome is the same - 7 pin for trailer lights, brakes and aux power feed, 2 pin plug/socket to the fridge.

Edit: I like the KT Cables metal plugs and sockets - they are robust, decent quality, and not particularly expensive. Will be replacing the 7-pin with one from their range when the time comes, and if they release a vehicle socket with a reed switch - will use one of them too. I just don't like decent amps going through the 12 pin plug as IMO the contacts aren't heavy-duty enough. Only my opinion of course, but then - it's my van so my opinion is the only one that matters :)

Thanks Phil for the pics and info. Jayco told us it would void the warranty of the fridge and battery if we changed to an Anderson but in laws changed theirs to Anderson so their old sterling fridge 150lt didn't stay cold but the now have Anderson and 187lt fridge in the silver line and haven't had any problems. We have a ford territory but are getting a new Everest in December also so just don't know which plug to go with. When you got your ute did you ask for particular wiring?
We have the bigger fridge as well and have no issues. When we order our Colorado can got the 12 pin plug I gave them the wiring diagram from jayco and it had the recommended wire size and fuse size etc which the auto electrician followed. We also had similar in the cruiser. The fridge stayed cold the entire time we were travelling.
Jayco will void your warranty as I got them to put an Anderson plug on to charge the battery from the portable solar panel. They were very clear in stating that it was only meant for that purpose and that it should not be used whilst travelling etc.
The new fridges are better than the previous models so maybe that is why we have not had any issues.
Regards
Phil

Also I don't know why you would change to an Anderson. If you are getting a new vehicle just get the dealership to wire up the new 12 pin plug to the required specs. Having a Anderson plug or 12 pin plug is no difference. It is the wiring in the car that needs to be correct with solenoids, correct wire size etc. The actual connect is irrelevant. Just my 2 cents.
