Well, it's only a couple of weeks till we set off to WA and I am looking for any info from everyone on the free camp sites as per the 'Camps Australia' book. I have heard that some spots are controlled by our idigenous compatriots and charge to go in and look at the views. While I have no objections to paying occasionally I do not want to get stung every time we stop.

We will be grateful for any and all info given and if any one has something to say that they feel maybe should not be said publicly then I would appreciate a PM. I would also like to hear about things that we should stop and look at and any thing or place we should avoid.

This is our first time to Perth and the west coast below Broome so we are going for 3 months and want to see as much as possible. We do plan to go inland from Kalgoorlie up to Port Hedland then down the coast so any help and advice will be much appreciated.

Here are some places that you might be keen on but you will have to pay a small fee to camp at.

Both Places will require drinking water, power, and Warroora a Chemicle toilet.


This is a cheap ocean camp just south of Coral Bay WA and you will need a 4x4.

I know you said free camping as well but if I was you I would Stay a night or two at Cervantes. The carvan park is right on the ocean and you can go and see the Pinnicles and go down too the local crayfish factory and have a look around.

Morning Chartrock, Not so much a camping spot but an excellent tourist stop (at the right time of year - May to Sep) is the Whale watching at the Head of the Bight, about 20-25kms east of the Nullarbor Roadhouse. It does cost a few $$ to get into the site and down to the viewing platforms, but I would have to say most definately worth the expense. I stopped there on a trip West in Aug 08, and there was a good 15-20 females (some with calves) swimming almost directly at the base of the cliffs, a simply amazing site. Enjoy your trip, am sure you will love the Sunny West!!

There is a place near cocklebiddy road house called eyre bird observatory. I just stopped in there about a month ago and found it very interesting. There are also a few caves around the cocklebiddy area. You can camp at the cocklebiddy roadhouse. You can not take a van down to the bird obversatory so its best to camp at roadhouse and make a day trip (its about 100km round trip). I'm not a bird watcher but still found the history of the area interesting. I stayed at the cocklebiddy motel with a few mates.

Micky, will definitely be calling in to the Head of the Bight in the hope of seeing the whales as well as the views.

Skippy, that sure sounds a great place to spend a few days, especially fishing :fish2: and snorkelling so have marked it on the map with a tick.

Wizzer, again, a magic place to visit and the site you have linked gives info on all the towns across the Nullarbor so lots of reading and note taking. :typing:
