Land Rover Discovery 4 or Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo

Hi all, we are looking for a new tow vehicle for our 18.57.8 OB & seem to have got the search down to these two options. Possibly used Disco or new Jeep, could I get thoughts from those who own, or have owned, either of these vehicles & their experiences with them. We're looking to replace our MY 11 Mitsubishi Triton dual cab 4x4 GLXR. Thanks everyone.

We have Jeep Grand and love it. Had no problems at all. Best issue is lack of dealers/service centres but Disco would be no better
Tows our 16,49-3 very well. Crap loads of power and great fuel economy

Same as Vere we have a 2012 JGC diesel with around 120K on it, it has been great, we use it fairly well, has done its fair share of desert towing in 40+ degree heat, done a lot of out back towing up to 48 degrees and never missed a beat, economical and comfortable as well. Having said that I am a fan of Disco's but for my money I would go for a new vehicle where possible.

We have a 2014 Limited and for towing our 20.64 caravan it's great. However, it really depends on what you want from the car. The Disco is a much better 4WD. The Grand is great as long as ground clearance is now required. It is when you get to rutted tracks that you have problems. However, as long as you are fine avoiding rutted tracks I think the Grand is a great vehicle to tow caravans and to drive in general. It also has great fuel economy and range with it's 96 l tank.

We have a D4 had a D3 great cars to drive if you need to use 7 seats they are almost full size seats in the rear. If you have kids can fit three car seats across the back.
D4 has plenty of power we avg around 16 tow Ng a 22 Starcraft around 2750kg

Very comfortable and easy to drive.

Although our D3 started cost $ past 100k on the clock. Our D3 was also petrol with the van was using too much fuel so low range before more fuel ;) 300k was just too short

I was not going to get another Disco although could not find another car that fitted the family and could tow. Almost got a Mux although with our van we where close on GVM

Your narrowed your field to two cars that have bad reputations. So prob going to get something negative from someone ;)
Brother in law has a Jeep never a problem
The things that went wrong on our D3 supposed to be updated in the new D4 so we might have a better run.

See which you like driving a new Jeep if they go our warranty be good just as new.

Love my Jeep GC. Towed 1000's of km. Long, hot distances too. 2675kg van. Tows like a train.

A five year warranty on a new one is a pretty big game changer I think. My Laredo was optioned up to in effect have most features of an Overlander at a significant saving. (Air suspension gives huge ground clearance and balances the van - 300kg ball weight - extremely well. Off Road Pack gave me limited slip diff and a few other extras. Laredo has 18 inch wheels. I put in leather).

This review is on the money I think.

I'm currently averaging 8.2 litres / 100 km on my 70km round trip to work (not towing obviously) but this fuel economy is better than my old 1.3l Suzuki Sierra from the early 90's! Comfortable, car like comfort.

My car is soon to turn 4 and I'm thinking the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk (similar specs to mine) is good value for a replacement.

Disco's are tremendous cars too. Only thing to think about is the (extra?) depreciation hit you'll get - even on a second hand one - because the Disco 5 is currently being rolled out - saw my first one today on the back of a truck tonight.
Happy choosing!

With the D5 coming out now it be interesting to see what that does to D4's. I know there was a rush on D4's when the D5 was announced.
The other thing with Land Rover's you normally do not buy anything newly released :)
The early D3 had problems which most where fixed end of 06 then the air compressor was replaced later on and into the D4 (Basically same car) they replaced the 2.7 with a 3.0.
A few people with early 2.7 D4's had problems a lot after getting timing belt done. I think from 07/08 D3 also you can replace the engines with a Ford Territory engine a lot cheaper.
I heard problems with the new 2.0 diesel they replaced the old 2.2 they used for years as well. They getting sorted now.
