Hi all,

I am approaching the final sighn off time for our new van and am wondering about a hyland hitch. I've never used one before but thought it would give me more clearance when I open the back door of my pajero. I have read on another forum that you need a ball with a longer shank to give clearance on the body of the coupling. Has anyone got one, opinions and will it give me more clearance as I suspect? Are they a pain to unhitch? I intend to use a WDH also, I realize they are more for offroad but in my case it's more for clearance.

Mate, I just took delivery of a 17.56.2 new 2012 Expanda last friday and after ordering and confirming the Hyland hitch option the bunnies at Jayco delivered my Camper with a standard Hitch caliming my Camper was too Heavy for the Hylander (which is another Porky from Jayco so called customer service team)..

I have had Hylader Hitches before and they are very good and easy to use, if you decide to get one I would suggest be prepared that Jayco may not deliver on the option even though its on the options list.

Otherwise, Love my Expanda, Quality of Build seems very good, great service from the Dealer in Ballarat.

Burnsy, we have one on ours. Can't tell you much about it as we only just got it put on. We also have WDH. Prior to this we use a trigg.

Hey Burnsy, we have one and love it. I have tried other hitches, like trigg and Oz hitch, but for me this is the easiest to use.

I don't use a WDH so no feedback from me with that.

The longer shank (or ball) you were talking about comes supplied with the hitch and can be used on other trailers with a standard hitch on them. Hope this helps.

Yes Burnsy, it has a 50mm spacer under it through Jayco canberra when i ordered the van.

There was another post recently about a Jayco dealer telling someone they couldn't have a Hyland hitch rated over 2.5t. This is crap.

Not sure which one you will get, but my in-laws got one rated to 3.5t on their sterling, which was a little different to mine. I only noticed it today on their van. Same height though so should clear the Paj rear door no worries if you got that one.

i have a hyland hitch on the camper trailer.... i used the standard tow ball that came with the car....been on some guttered tracks and haven't had an issue although there is a difference in weight between a camper trailer and expanda

as a foot note...don't reverse into the hitch....the bolt on top does some nasty damage to today bumpers

Just checked some old paperwork on the Expanda, I don't have an exact price on the Hyland but was quoted $320 on the Tregg so the $398 might be on the money.

I have seen the Hyland 3500 With Handbrake for around the $395 from other online suppliers, so it is in the ballpark.

The manufacturer might be charging this as it may be seen as a "premium" product in the market.

Interesting that the full McHitch 3.5T Caravan Kit is only $295. Would like to know if there are any differences in rated capabilities.

On our current corner country trip are using the hyland hitch. Roads so far vary from rutted to sand and rather rocky. No problems with hitch and van towing well. Would buy this hitch again
