I'm looking at buying a 2011 PX Ranger. Is this something I should be wary of and if so how do I identify pre-existing damage? Or should I stay away from this make/model completely?

I don't think you need to worry as I believe when it happens it kills the engine good and proper.

Comes down to who you believe, I own a ranger MK2 and haven't had a prob, read heaps about it, spoke with a few dealers including the one I bought from, and they wouldnt confirm or deny it.....spoke with a local workshop whilst enquiring about maintenance for my ranger, and the owner straight out said he's never had a prob, and works on a fair few, (mining vehicles), he went on to say he had a ranger in his shop for a week with an engine rebuild after being drowned, which was there for 10 days, and he dropped the new second hand donk in and it fired first kick, after having no oil in the motor for the entire period it was in his shop....the tradesman went on to say its a myth, hyped up by...well who knows...!!!!
