We have just bought a new triton dual cab and am wondering what is the best electronic braking system to use and where you have placed it on your car.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Yep, love my redarc . Easy! Cheap kits on eBay, good controller. I mounted mine on the standard under dash switch panels.

Also do a search on brake controllers in the forum search function and this may give you an idea what suits your application.

I'm having brake issues with my van & one of the questions Jayco asked me is "Do I have a Redarc brake controller" I asked why, apparently they have a small amount of stray voltage even when the brakes are off, which is just enough to activate the brake magnets & cause them to drag all the time.:bolt:

Hi still dreamin, I have the TEKONSHA PRIMUS unit in my ML triton and it fits perfectly where the ash tray goes.

Could this be a Jayco smokescreen? (hope you get it sorted BTW)

Tekonsha P3 for me, I like the proportional controller. Down side is that it is a much larger unit that the discreet Redarc

I agree with relgate I also like the proportional controller. It gives you more accurate breaking control. I got myself into trouble with a time delay unit along time ago. Would not use one again.

Tekonsha P3 for me too.......wouldn't use anything else.
With the non-proportional ones like the Redarc the driver must manually control the voltage going to the vans brakes, ie. set full power when on the highway but then turn down the power when trundling through town. The issue there is that if you forget to turn them back up after leaving town and on the open highway suddenly need all the brakes, they won't be there.

Have a read of the first post on this thread,
http://caravanersforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=46041
It may not be the cause of the accident but he specifically mentions that they tried the brake over-ride, and they didn't work after failing to turn them back up after passing through a town.

PS. My P3 is also out of the way.:D

the redarc sends a few volts out to the van just to see if it's connected, you may notice the lights go green only when a van is on. this voltage is enough to cause the magnets to drag slightly causing undue wear and heat, and on a small van can even pull the tug up with a no throttle roll.

I'm not saying they are no good (i use one myself) but if i could of afforded a proportional instead of time delay i would of gone proportional

ALKO hasn't listed them as a approved controller for the ESC, much to redarc's disgust (and they are still trying to get approval)
that just means they arn't approved in testing, they still will work with the ESC tho. it's like your car manufacture say to only use mobil oil in your car, but castrol will do the job anyway.

Thanks for the thoughts everybody. We have decided to go with the tekonsha IQ. This will then fit beside the cigarette socket on the dash. We were told that the P3 would work but was overkill as they were made for braking super heavy boats.

This info as to approval is incorrect, and has been so since early last year.

Even that list has expanded since I last saw it.
I had originally ordered my vehicle to have the Redarc EBRH fitted but seeing as it wasn't on ALKO's approved list at that time I cancelled it. It got fitted anyway as a mistake and I wasn't billed for it. Following ALKO's adding it to the list I didn't change to the Prodigy and haven't had a problem with it. Regardles I intend to change anyway as I have the Prodigy standing by. There is a rumour that Redarc are developing a proportional version though apparently. I'd prefer that as under dash space is limited.

Thanks for that ..... seems funny that they never mention thechanges in the newsletter i get from em every couple of months, will notify the mob at work so they can expand ppl's choices of controllers
