hello

Well spent almost a hour getting back into the van which was locked with both sets of keys in it

Sent eldest boy through the roof hatch over the bed.

Now pretty sure the lock should not work like this.
Door is open you slide down the latch inside the door to lock and shut the door. It shuts locked ;(
No key needed
Pretty sure it used to not slide down if door was open?
Or am I imagining things again

I don't recall you being able too! Ofcourse there's the issue where you can get the key out at right angles and lock the door? They are don't be rude locks dave

If your lock is the same as ours @davemc I think you have an issue.....

When we started taking our Grandson away I tried locking it from the inside and closing the door (He had a habit of locking house doors from inside back then!)
There is a small pin next to the slide down internal lock that will allow you to lock the door from inside but from memory the door won't close when it is locked.

Or always have a small person able to scramble in through other ways and unlock it!

Sounds like it's stuffed.

I always leave 1 set of keys in the car, you never know..............

I know your saying its a year old, but if eveyone comes in and out of your van 10 times in a day - thats over 50 times the door is open / closed

wouldnt take much for it to be knocked slightly and then do the rest of the damage itself

Just change it out? They can't be expensive and if it fails like ours did(sideways key drama) you can't open it from either side. You have to dismantle it from inside!

I know this doesn't help with the original problem, but is perhaps a workaround... We hide a spare door key in one of those magnetic key holders. Up inside the open end of a van chases rail has always worked for us.

We have just learnt that we can pull the catch down on our door then pull it closed locking our keys inside. We have always locked our door with the key but now realise that you don't actually need a key to do this. We carry a spare cruiser key hidden outside the vehicle and now might have to put a spare van key hidden somewhere. It wouldn't be too bad if you had left a hatch open and could get a little one to climb through it but I doubt that either of us would be able to fit one leg through the hatch let alone two ;)
