I think I have done our homework right but just need some reassurance from the experts on here. Take delivery of our new 16.49.1 expanda next week. We will be towing with our CX5 diesel. We have a WDH to take a little weight off the ball. Has anyone any experience towing with the CX5? We have been towing our hawk and occasionally our ski boat (obviously not at the same time), with no worries at all. Obviously the new van is bigger and a bit heavier.
Cheers

love that model van , your very close to the limts of the CX5 , try not to load up the front of the van with too much stuff as it will push you over the limit, as you only have 5 kg to play with.

Picked up the van today. Towed it home without the WDH bars on and the water tank was almost full. Slight amount of bounce but the ride sat quite flat. Given the bars were not on I suggest it should ride ok with an empty water tank and bars on. We are very mindful of the weight up front and will minimise as much as we can.

If I am correct 150KG on the ball and 1800KG all up for the CX5 oil burner, the Jayco lists a 16.49-1 at 145Kg ball and 1458Kg tare, which doesn't leave a lot (if I have the correct CX5 spec) I would imagine the load in the car will lessen this significantly as well, just make sure to pack light.

Hey @Frank and :welcome: to the forum. Would love to see some pics of your van and car setup together, sounds like an interesting combination. Would also love to see what fuel consumption you achieve after a few trips. :)

Well we did our first run from Adelaide to Mildura on the weekend. I have to say I am impressed with how the CX5 went. On the way there I was getting used to how it all towed, easily could have sat on 110 though for increase fuel burn it is not the best choice. Nonetheless I was using the sport shift on cruise control between 5th and 6th and it never batted an eyelid. Came home yesterday and sat on 95 the whole way and managed fuel burn rate of 11.9 per 100km. The only adjustment needed was to raise the bars slightly more for my own peace of mind than anything else. The expanda setup was a breeze and proved to us that the purchase was well worth it. Only complaint would be the mattress joiner... Any good suggestions... ?

Sounds like good towing L/100kms!
As for the mattress joiner, well there is a wealth of info on here about them, but i think the most common solution is an eggshell mattress topper. We are about to put one on ours just hadn't gotten around to it yet so i can't speak from experience. :)
Its a shame that the CX5 wasn't rated slightly higher with a slightly larger fuel tank! would be i recon an awesome bit of kit for a tow vehicle IMO. :)

Someone can correct if I am wrong. Running with an empty rear tank will increase the weight on the ball.

Well done.
Is it just the pic or does it look like its sitting down at the front of the van / rear of the car?
Have you done anything to the suspension or plan on using or do use a weight distribution hitch setup? The rear of the car does not look too bogged down or anything

@Alan - from a weight distribution point of view, i would assume that yes, not having water in your tanks will make your ball weight heavier depending i guess on the location of your water tank, however this would also quite clearly be dependant on how you load the van itself with other items.

I think you need to really look at your compliance plate, it gives you two ball masses - empty and max loading. I think the brochure gives you the empty mass, although the brochure at the time i purchased my van, had 162kgs for my van...
My compliance plate for me 16.49-3 has 172kg empty and 210kgs max when loaded.
So my assumption with the empty weight is as the van was delivered to the customer. I could very well be wrong here??

This photo was before I adjust the WDH. Sat much better on the return leg. Not intending to do anything to the suspension just yet. As for the tank, it is located in front of the axle hence why I emptied it during travel.

Hi Antman, I think it is an illusion in the photo. If you follow the road gutter line from behind the van well toward the back of the van, the gap appears constant
