Anywhere in the great outdoors
Hi guys, I have been hearing about some great phone app out there that may be very handy for some of us and I was wondering if we could get a list of the most popular and useful going.
I would like to get quite a few before we head off around Australia and I'm sure others would too.
I have heard ones that can tell you about what local fish are around the area and which are protected etc, local shell varietys, plants and bush tucker, birds, measuring power usage in van, reversing cameras etc. It seems endless!!!!!!

I will start it off with a couple that have been useful to us with kids............................................

- SHOW THE LOO (FREE)
- ST JOHN FIRST AID (CAME WITH FIRST AID KIT, THINK ITS FREE)
- WEATHERZONE (FREE)

Hi, Antenna Mate gives you the location and direction of local TV transmitters so you can quickly know where to point your TV antenna.

I also use iHandy Level (or any other free app that gives you a bubble level).

Antenna mate here too! also the where is app for ur i phone converts the normal mapping to a street by street moving GPS with talking directions from either Jen Hawkings, Dame Edna or the wog boy, very comical and a greta laugh as well as being a great GPS!
the kids love "i need cheesburger" app tells you and gives directions to the closest fast food outlets!!

agree with 'show the loo' (invaluable!!), 'wikicamps', 'antenna mate', and 'PocketWeather' (or any of the weather apps).
Also 'CFA' (when it works) and 'VicTraffic' and becuase buisness pays for fuel, 'BP locations'.....nothing too excitng of innovative...

ANTENNA MATE great thing about it is it tells you whether they transmit in vertical or horizontal makes a big difference if you don't have one of these antennas that does both , SATELLITE LOCATER, makes setting up a bit easier, WIKI CAMPS, STARWALK, great for a bit of fun hold it up to the sky and will tell you which star is which, kids love it,DASH COMMAND, with the addition of an OBD Cable or Wifi interface allows you to access your vehicles CPU and gives you some great realtime info as well as the ability to read and clear engine fault codes, FLASHLIGHT, for those late night pee trips and for those like me who like to bash out a song or two on the old Guitar nTRACK TUNER, COMMBANK KACHING with an iCarte I can use my iPhone on one of those machines that you just wave your credit card near and now have added Tapatalk too

Forgot ROADTRIP too great for keeping track of fuel usage

Not an app as such but I've recently added Explore Australia 2013 titles to my iBook shelf (Victoria, NSW at moment). Easier than carting large books around and more than enough information to get started exploring.
I also like NoiseSniffer. Let's me see how noisy (in dB) Capt Gadget's someones singing is, or his generator, before I complain!
Like others, AntennaMate helps in reception grey spots, even with my omni directional antenna.
I also have a couple of browsers on the iPad and use AtomicWebBrowser set to open on www.willyweather.com.au for a quick comprehensive weather report; iCabMobile (open up to Expandas Downunder); plus Google and Safari. I like to carry around useful
documents in iAnnotatePDF and I have FileMakerGo with a couple of databases I might need to refer to while away.
I like to listen to audio podcasts when I can't sleep, so Podcasts is a favourite.

We Use Wikicamps - good camping info & like the sat finder will come in handy for if we get sat tv, Antenna Mate - as stated before great for setting up tv, Adobe Reader - have manuals for all things in van, just incase they are required. Contour App - helps set up my POV camera for filming and allows remote on/off of recording. Paypal - can pay most things with this even Telstra bill now. Some shopping apps for ease of finding things in different towns (Aldi, Big W etc). Road Trip HD for tracking fuel usage and servicing. NRMA just incase of breakdown and now noise sniffer

If you like running, walking, riding etc, then RUNKEEPER is a good one to track your progress. Funny though i use it less the older i get:apologetic:

Also there was a good article in the free March 2013 issue of ARB 4x4ACTION about iphone photography apps. If you are like me and couldn't be bothered carrying your camera around now you have an iphone then this is a good article. Two of the apps i will be trying from the artcile are CAMERA AWESOME (free) and SLOWSHUTTER ($0.99).

If you are a coffee lover BEANHUNTER (free) can be handy when you are in a new area and need to find a good coffee (i.e. not Macca's).

Also another vote for wikicamps, we used it heaps on our Vic/Tassie holiday last year.

I got put onto PDF Maps last week - many maps need to be purchased but there are a huge number of free ones. It would be clearer on the ipad rather than iphone but going to the Grampians last weekend I downloaded the grampians map with no problem, and was the same one as the visitor centre gave out.
(not on Android)
