Hi all,
we just bought our first van which is a 2004 expanda outback in great condition. I’ve set it up in the driveway and realized that there are no rear stabiliser legs.
Is this normal?
I feel like there should be four but I have only found the two wind down legs at the front.

Thanks,
Aidan

Hi @Aido and welcome to the forum. I am sure that there would be FOUR wind down legs unless the rear ones have been damaged and discarded. Have a careful look to see if the bolt through the chassis holing the support has ever been there and also that the descending struts are not just wound into the space of the "U" support. If definitely missing, check that "'drop down" style have have not replaced the originals and been removed since. Replacements are available through Jayco, but check mounting position first for damage.

Sounds weird not having any at the back, which type have you at the front ????

I would have thought an outback would have had drop downs...

Hey @Drover
Yeh the older style wind downs at the front but nothing at the back.
Will look at replacing the front ones and go drop downs all around.
Does it matter if the drop downs don’t go straight up and down ie if they are on an angle?
Because the drop down styles that Alko male are only in two sizes and I think both are too long to go straight up and down.
cheers,
Aidan

Hi,

they make 4 sizes. Three are in their catalog and a shorter one not in the catalog is made specifically for Jayco.
I have the part number for the Jayco special and the contact number at AlKo if you need the details.

However, these were made for the tourers.

take care
Mike

if its a real outback there should be plenty of room for drop downs, they do give better support being vertical though have a look at other vans to see how they are fitted as unlike the others they don't usually mount of the chassis rail they have their own rail which keeps them tucked up out of the way if they mounted of the chassis they would catch on things..... a lot of folk just use caravan stands instead of their drop/wind down legs as they give better stability.

@Drover and @Aido , on my Penguin, I have wind down/up stabilisers front and rear. I looked at the drop downs to replace the wind ups, but after reading info on retro-fitting on this forum from members, decided against it. Even though I have a reversed axle to give me more clearance, the problem of attachment was still there. I did not think much of the bases on the standard stabilisers (not too stable and just dug into the ground unevenly too!) so ordered a set of 4 ALCO Big Foot bases from Ebay for around $35.00 and fitted them over the ends. The same stable, load-spreading type as the drop down type, and with springs to retract the bases flat when up, so not going to catch on anything. Yes, a little bit of winding, but super stable on any surface. Very happy with result.
