Does anyone here refill the little 1lb gas cylinders from their larger gas bottles?

I read the disclaimer on the smaller cylinders that they are not suitable to be refilled, but the at the same time plenty of of people are doing it will small adaptors.

After watching this Youtube clip
it appears (at least in the states) there is a kit that is suitable for refilling.

Anyone seem anything here that is suitable for (legally) refilling the smaller cylinders? For me it will be about convenience when on the road as I doubt I will be able to buy the small cylinders in remote area's.

Ive had a Colman HWOD for over 20 years that uses those bottles. Ive always refilled mine directly from a 9kg and been using the same bottles for most of that time and had no real issues.

I still use the HWOD quite often. Even with a bathroom van we use the HWOD when freecamping so we can use any non potable water. I dont have a HWS at my factory and use the HWOD there as well. I tried the gas bottle adapter, but found it just a nuisance.

I presume you can buy all kinds of fancy dancy equipment but if the manufacturer says theyre not reuseable, id be guessing youll be going it alone. I just use a simple $5 adapter. On odd refills ive encountered the odd leak that needed some love to stop, im guessing from overfilling. Early on i used to pull the pressure valve and fill them, but i only use bottle pressure now

Try using a set of scales when you fill, so long as you know what the full weight is...so long as your filling with liquid not vapour....hence the supply bottle upside diwn in video....possibly in breach of numerous regulations here.

Easy enough to buy another new one and weigh it before I use it.

I am really after a more "legal" bottle for refilling if it exists in AU. I don't think it does.

Hi,
is there any reason to not use one of these POL to Coleman/BOM/UNEF hoses and get rid of the 1lb (465g) disposable canisters completely and run any of the Coleman appliances from a standard 4.5 kg / 9kg cylinder?

https://www.snowys.com.au/gas-hose-colemanbomunef-to-pol

A gas hose that enables devices utilising disposable 465g LPG/Propane canisters to run from refillable LPG cylinders with a POL fitting.
Converts disposable 465g LPG canister fitting (sometimes referred to as Coleman fitting, BOM or UNEF) to POL cylinders.
  • Suitable for: Buddy Heaters, Coleman Hot Water On Demand, Coleman Stoves, Aquacube Logic and Aquacube Digital, and Gasmate barbeques
  • 1.5 metres long
No messing around wasting gas while illegally refilling disposable cylinders and perfectly legal.

cheers
Mike

For me it would be convenience - I take the "portable" cylinders and BBQ out for day trips where I don't have the van (or 9Kg bottles)

@Ligedy (I don't think he is around on the forum anymore but he would know)

Also @mikerezny I guess you would need to "undo" your gas lines every time to screw this in. I don't think you can legally have an unregulated socket to screw into (the webber style connections sit on the regulated side)

As the devices have their regulators built on the devices they can't be run from the webber connections either (I checked this out) - different pressures

Hi,
ok, I can understand that.

I did think of the $20 canister stoves, even the dual ones. But that won't replace a reasonable BBQ.

The adapters to fill the disposable bottles from a standard 4.5/9kg POL cylinder must be quite popular. There are heaps of people selling them on eBay.

cheers

Hmm. Most of the major camping shops in Australia sell these cables and they all also sell Coleman gas appliances. My suspician is that they must be legal.
Otherwise Coleman would be jumping up and down.

I am confused since I have Companion and Primus portable stoves and gas lights that run off the smaller cylinders with the 3/8" BSP fitting and none of them go through a regulator. However, the hose from my Companion stove to the cylinder has a gas nozzle in the end with the 3/8" fitting. Exactly the same as is in each of the stove burners. I guess that is there to provide a very rudimentary gas pressure regulator.

Perhaps the adapter cables have a reduction nozzle as well.

I have an adapter from POL to 3/8" so I can run the stove from my 9kg cylinders.

I was thinking it would be more convenient to run it off a spare 9kg cylinder rather than disconnecting the gas supply to the van.

cheers
Mike

I have a box of gas bottle fittings from my days of camping they ensured my Primus accessories would fit Companion bottles and mickey versa, I even have POL fitting to adapt for either type as I liked the gas pole light to run off a big bottle sometimes with a T piece for stove, nothing worse than not being able to connect up.....never used a regulator except for the barbie off the big bottles.
Thankfully nowadays no need for mongrel gas lights.....

I have found the $20 gas cooker with disposable cans brilliant, buy a blister pack at Bunnings for $4 and it does a grand job of cooking the snags or the Billy, only 2 of us so single burner is plenty....travels in back always with a billy and smoko gear, beats the small burner which screwed onto a 4kg bottle...gets more use camping than the weber now.

Recharging your own bottles no matter size is frowned upon, it should be done with a Decanting Gas bottle they draw from the bottom of the bottle so its liquid that is transfered to the empty bottle, the bleed screw should be used to allow the bottle to fill correctly, if just using a normal LPG bottle right side up will only get you gas, turning a normal LPG bottle upside down allows the liquid to be drawn into the empty bottle BUT this can freeze the valve open, give 1st degree burns to bare skin or stick bare skin to the bottle, liquid propane splashed while performing the operation can blind as well as burn.............so wear gloves, eye protection, don't hold the bottles they must be on solid supports, really don't do it, I did a "Safe to Fill" course many moons ago, too far back to remember but not only shown the safe way to do it but also the backyard ways and what often goes wrong and while I DiY most things, decanting LPG I do with the proper gear, you only have one chance with it, bit like DiY explosive, one flash and your ash.... I can do Boom too it scares me.

Im with @Macca_75, the loss of convenience by carting and connecting a gas bottle would render the HWOD useless for me, and paying $10 for 80c of gas probably wont ever happen either. The HWOD unit lives in a bag with the 3 x cans ... as the saying goes, just add water.

Mike, Coleman sell the adaption hoses to connect standard gas bottles direct to the Coleman appliance.

Theres no wasted gas, I dont bleed the cans because that promotes leaking. $10 for a 450g of Coleman gas in a so called throw away can, or 18 x decanted can refills from 9kg bottle refilled by our mate in Noble Park for $16. Bit of a no brainer really.
