I have two months to buy a new car as the 20.64 arrives in October.
Brain says 200, heart says Disco.
I will probably be buy a 2017 model of either and potentially doing the lap.
I am chasing the opinion of seasoned campaigners.

Have neither, Landcruiser would be my choice especially if traveling outback as there is a Toyota dealership in most larger towns where Disco might have to be towed if needed.

3lt engine okay but not that pissy 2lt job in the Disco though while I love Landy's I would go the Cruiser just for the room and better power ratio.

Not a lot of choice now a days have you thought of the Y62 Pootroll
Me being me would probably go the Landy they would be much nicer to drive without the van good luck but either should be okay

My thoughts exactly. The resale of a Pootroll worries me.
As does the lightweight Landy.

@RobRoy You could be like me and not worry about re sale prices, (I bought a Jeep) but yes the 200 seems to be the only vehicle that holds its value well, but they also cost a lot and use a lot more fuel than most

Value for money 2016 -17 WK 2Grand Cherokee 3 litre diesel .Not Quadralift suspension.Plenty of aftermarket goodies now available for the WK2s.Have a 2012 WK2 and a 2010 WH both been very reliable. I think Toyota have had more combined vehicle recalls than most makes in recent times. Now this DPF saga will be a doozy.Plenty of other makes having similar problems.Owners being told wrong oils being used etc I know a tech guy at Penrite oils.He said in Aust nearly all manufactures are recommending too light a grade oil in their 4x4 turbo vehicles.Hot weather ,towing large vans means more blow by with associated problems

Ive been saying that for years, upped the grade on my Jeeps and my Colorado because of that thought on oils and they all ran fantastic, Mostly city driving is a real killer for CRD's and DPF's .................. Read about the tojo DPF problems, seems like its doing the rounds Jeep had heaps DPF problems as well as a few others, suppose depends how long the Big Wigs keep their heads in the sand to how big an issue it becomes.....also why dealers aren't all knowing.

We have now had a LC200 GX for 3 years a 2016 model with DPF and no problems so far, just got to 75,000km with about +50,000km of that towing our 2.5tonne off road van in some remote places on rough roads and tracks. Beside the really good comfortable ride and easy towing one thing we really like is the Toyota dealer network. We just had our last service and front brake pads (after 70,000Km) done in Alice Springs and were really pleased with the dealer, not cheap, but it is a Toyota.

We had an interesting experience when we first got the LC200 a fuel filter light started to flash so quickly looked up the manual and then googled Toyota dealers, we were 20 minutes from the dealer in Jamestown SA and rang them and they said if it is flashing safe to drive to them so we did and on the spot they changed the fuel filter and $95 later we were on our way with new fuel filter and problem solved. We were very impressed.

We had two Pajeros for many years and were excited when we saw a Mitsubishi dealer in a country town, now we have a Toyota dealers seem to be everywhere even in remote towns (thanks to mining companies and farmers?). I think the DPF problems are mainly with the 2.8l engine the DPF in the LC200 so far it does not seem to be a problem and we do not even notice its operation.

Have a look at our thread on this on this forum.

Good luck with your new tow whatever you buy.

PS Did own a Landrover Defender 110 for a couple of years, was not impressed with Landrover Australia warranty support, or for that matter the number of annoying mechanical issues it had, hopefully Landrover has got better in the last 20years?

Great reply thank you. The crusher is in front by a bit. I got a lift home in a mates landy the other day and it was amazing to sit in. However I agree, the Toyota seems more practical on the big lap

A mate bought the a 2018 GX and is now getting a larger caravan 21ft Retreat to replace his ~17ft single axel Nova. He use to tow with an VW Amarok and keeps telling me how much more he likes towing with the GX LC200. Value for money the GX is in my opinion the best of the LC200s same running gear and a bit cheaper, still with a good resale value. If very lucky you may pick up an ex-mining GX from Pickles, but second hand they are hard to find. The dealers do not want to sell them new as they get a bigger markup on the GXL, VX etc. so you have to expect a 2- 3 month wait for a new GX and be prepared to shop around dealers for best price.

PS the 138l standard fuel tank on the LC200 is a nice feature for touring, economy is not good but, depending on how you drive, I get 20l/100km to 22l/100km most of the time when towing and touring at 100km/hr. However, the 600km to 700km range on one tank when towing is good.

I get 17 to 20 per 100 towing my bit over 2.5 tonne outback towing allways in 4th .... 5th and 6th are over drive going by my scanguage auto temp goes up 15 to 20 deg if towing in 5th
The GX is a great model easy to clean with no carpet quick vack and wipe with damp cloth its like brand new ..
No tailgate so easy to reach in to get stuff and load up standed with snorkel and recovery points most of the time bullbar...... no side steps if new but i just brought new ones 270 from Killa Concepts
I have a 2014 model no Dpf
And yes great resale can find good ones out there kitted out a bit and ready to do the lap .... just get any second hand car checked i get State roads to do all my checks there in every state there very good .....
As others have said GXs have all the driving stuff you need enough air bags
Maybe raido up grade if you want but the one in it is fine
Good luck i got mine in silver second hand most are white

Hi @RobRoy
How did you go with the car selection?
We have had the same debate between the pairing. With new van also arriving in October the clock is ticking haha
Think we are very close to making a decision, but curious to learn from others looking for similar.
Cheers

We have chosen the landcruiser. Haven’t purchased one yet, that cash can earn interest until the time LOL.
It’s GXL VS VX, prob the slightly newer GXL
