Hi All,

We ordered a new 17.58-1 OB about 3 weeks ago and I opted out of taking the Jayco offered TV, the 19in Sphere as the location they mount it (at the end of main bed) didn't suit as it would be near impossible for the kids to see from their bunks and I certainly didnt want them all piling into the main bed with us ( 6mo, 5yo, and 16yo) plus I thought it was a bit small @19.5in although there is a bigger 24in unit available.
Anyway I fought with the factory to get the TV point located around the fridge cabinet as that will give us the greatest flexibility for viewing angles and options, although it will not be mounted to a bracket, it will just use the stand and be packed away when travelling.
What I want is a 26-30in unit that runs both 240-12V with inbuilt DVD and reasonable USB capability so it will recognise a portable HDD.
Before I get onto fleabay does anyone have any brand recommendations or where else to look?

Cheers Glen

The smaller sized Aldi TV's say 19 to 24" usually are 12/240V. That is where I got mine from. As it is 12V we can use it when off grid camping without the need for an inverter.

I was going to get a Kogan, then I found one that had the DVD inbuilt and ran on 12v at JB HiFi - 19" and works great.

I think it was $149.00 from memory and has been going well for 2 years so far.

Might be pushing to find a 12v over 24", have found the Aldi TV's to be good with all the slots and will play more formats than our Toshiba....the best formats to use I have found are AVI, WMV and Mpeg2 are good all round formats, I like AVI myself, if you are an Apple person well M4V and the other Apple formats are usualy hit or miss with most non apple stuff, I find it easier to plug the laptop into the TV via HDMI and play my movies thru it, so much easier to control the thing.......The ALDI gear also receives the new HD TV format which is streamed at MP4, a lot don't.

We have a 12V 28" Teac TV/DVD Combo purchased from JB Hifi.
The TV wasn't advertised as 12V and it was only when we spoke to the sales guy that we learned a little lesson.... Check the rear of the TV and see what sort of plug it has and also if it has a small power supply and not just a standard 240V lead going into the back of it. He explained that there are a few appliances out there that are actually 12V but not advertised as such!

Maybe ONE television isn't your best option? Would it be better to have the original TV in its factory location, then another (on a stand, on another bracket - whatever suits) in a location better suited for the kids viewing?

Jayco charged us bugger-all to have additional antenna and 12v outlets installed in the bunks.

I was hoping @dagree that would be the case with my laptop but it wants 19v 2.3a, hungry thing so have to hook up the portable invertor.............2 tele's with slide mounts so you can move them around one inside, one outside, is the way to go especially with kids on a wet day.................22" at least though, our's is plugged into the aux on the radio for sound as the speakers are usually crap on the TV's no matter what the brand.

I did build a power supply once, back in the analogue days, great project ,it was the size of 2 house bricks just so much easier now to buy one, heaps cheaper.

Your probably right @Doc but the budget wont be stretching to a second unit ATM, I can add other co-ax outlets later so maybe down the track we might add to the TV collection but hopefully they will be outside most of the time enjoying the outdoors which is why we bought the bloody thing.

Cheers Glen.

We have a 12V 28" Teac TV/DVD Combo purchased from JB Hifi.

Thanks @dagree, we have a JB an hour up the road and maybe one where the dealer is in Bundy, I have already checked out the units at BigW for exactly that, but they are all direct 240V, I know a few these days are 12V but run a 240 to 12V power adaptor and that size is exactly whay we are looking for, do you remember off hand how much $$ you paid?

Cheers Glen.

We got a Palsonic 28" when Dick Smith was around cheap on special did not say 12v although has the correct plug and worked. No DVD and not HD although bigger then the small 21" that came with van.
Most people we met have the Kogan ones I did not care regarding DVD as use USB now for shows and heard they normally break and your DVD gets stuck. Have a little portable DVD unit if the kids want to watch something I hook up.

The one thing with the 28" it takes up space we left it at home this trip as the vans one fits under the bed

Yeah we don't have an aerial either. It is just for when the weather is bad and we are stuck inside then a DVD will get chucked on.
