Most interesting, looks like the lug on the actuating lever has broken and the magnet was dragging on the drum and cooked things as the shoes aren't burnt ..... You apply brakes, the lug snaps off and magnet stays on drum, jams and drags enough to cause bearing to heat up, if the shoes had been dragging you would have seen lots of smoke before it burst into flames....... well thats just a guess really

Drover . I think you would be pretty close I just can't get my head around the fact that a set of brand new brakes replaced by jayco under warranty at jayco in Darwin in September last year could end up like that . I'm so glad I didn't just take the person's word that he had a full inspection and service done by jayco in Sydney before he sold the van to us . The boy's at Jayco in Darwin were really good when I rang to find out the story of what had gone on the service manager said i remember this bloke he had his brake controller wound up as high as it could go and carried on like you wouldn't believe until jayco fixed the issue. It just gose to show you never ever take anyone's word . How this all happened was the simple fact i couldn't find which type of bearings were in it because on the 10Inch drum there are 2 types of bearings were used tapered and not tapered one's. And if they had of been 12 inch just the 1 type they are photo's I was sent by Jayco in Darwin from when it was taken in and these are of all 4 wheels I just can't get my head around the fact that it was drove from Darwin to were the person lived and a couple short trips before it was sold to us 8 months later either their is a serious under lying issue or owner operator miss use either way either way a simple bearing and service has turned out to be quite a big job all I wanted was to know the bearing type so i could get spares for our trip to the northern territory in about 3 weeks time for 8 weeks

From what I can see I would go new shoes, a new actuator arm and new magnets, all round, shop for prices my rig has parrellel bearings like yours, my spare Jap bearings from bearing shop with seal was $20 a set where van shop wanted $36 for possibly a chink set....I always pull down and check the actual numbers or measurement, I have found it to be safer.
Oh and Di a full check on function from controller.

You would think so mate but it didn't thank God in this case the bloke that had the van before me said that he had the van fully inspected by Jayco before he sold it . As i said yeh wright I'm sure jayco would have seen this as the had replaced them less than 10 months ago under warranty
