Can anyone help me... I curious to find out what your expanda (2014 with independent suspension) weights are on the 17.56.1? I have been reading a bit on here here and there seems to be a lot of difference between them.
Many thanks

Hi Jobswan
Good question mate. We have our 17.56.1 due for pickup in September and also drive a 2012 Prado and the weight issue has been on my mind a bit. Our brochure reads the Tare weight as 1850kg we have kept our options to only the wind up TV antenna and the water filter so hopefully it wont change weight much.
Interested to see what the weigh bridge reads it always seems higher than expected.

We picked up our new 2014 17-56-2 Outback on Friday. We have packed most of our gear, filled the two water tanks and toilet tank to the top, full gas bottles, packed all our tinned food and blankets etc ready to leave next week. I took it over the weighbridge in Ayr today and it came in as 2440 kgs. Just have to pack our clothes and fresh food. I reckon it will be right on 2500kgs when we leave.
The compliance plate states the ATM as 2464, the Tare 2171 and the GTM as 2443.

Wow that's really good. I'm guessing yours has the new independent suspension? And it's a -2 WOW..we didn't go the -2 as we were worried about the weight with the towing capacity with our car.
Thanks for your reply! :cheer2:

Our 1756 2 ob 2014 has tare 2152 and ATM 2627. 1756 1 only has a Luggage load of 400kg I think and 1756 2 has a luggage load of 475kg. I think u should be ok with the 1756 1 and prado.

This is interesting. Mat, if you have loaded everything and your weight is 2440kg and you ATM is 2464kg, does that mean you only have 24kg for all your clothes & fresh food ?

Hi Mat
Just adding the difference between your tare and atm. 293kg of luggage doesn't sound much for a 1756 2. Mine has 205kg of water and gas together alone when I fill up tanks incl hot water service.

The fact is vans are getting bigger.
And with 2 water tanks and two gas cylinders plus say an extra battery makes for little additional payload weight.
The Prado/Pajero is a low risk proposition from a reliability/parts/resale perspective. But...
Bigger vans are making things sale close to the wind.
I couldn't make our Pajero work with any level of confidence so understand the predicament some find themselves in.

I agree, many and myself included are finding ourselves at the limit with 2500kg towing capacity, the issue is we can't afford both a caravan and a more suitable car to tow it at the same time. My pajero tows our 2014 1756 2 OB well and gets us places we want to go, but it is just a stepping stone until we can afford something more suitable. It's legal, but I want room to move and the convenience of being able to go off road without having to nurse my car the entire time. The sad bit is, most other cars other than the landcruiser and some other beasty cars are in the same category when it comes to engine size and car strength. Just because their rating says they can tow 3 tonne and above, doesn't necessarily mean they are better towing vehicles.
