Warburton Caravan park is about an hour and a half drive from Melbourne. The park itself sits between the Yarra River (before it turns brown) and Mt Donna Buang. Up the road is Warburton itself which is a nice stroll from the park and has nice cafe's, everything you need for supplies, cinema and hippie shops.
Things to bring for this place would be your bikes as there is a great bike track and rubber tyres for floating down the river. If you are in to fishing then brown trout can be caught from the river (Fly fishing is the best). This place is fantastic for kids with a small playground, heaps of open space, tennis courts and a river to play in.
There are 4wd tracks to explore up the road and Upper Yarra reservoir and the top of Mt Donna Buang to visit.
Reefton pub is great for a meal which is a short drive towards the upper Yarra reservoir.
In peak seasons the park is crammed full of tents and caravans.
Dogs and pets allowed.
Amenities are kept clean.
You can also borrow a drum from reception to create your own camp fire in.

Some watch outs on this park is the showers. $1 for 5 minutes of hot shower. Doesn't sound like much, but start adding this up for a family who has to each have a shower per day. Laundry also is also a watch out expense wise. Washing machines ok, but expect to feed the dryers with extra coin to get those clothes dry.

Appart from that, this park would have to be one of my favorites because it is not too far for short stays but if you are looking for a place to just sit for a week or two, then there is enough to do or just sit around and watch the river flow by.

Stayed there a while back and loved it.
We had a site directly adjoining the river and as Brad says - sat and watch it (and the li-los) drift by.
Unfortunately it bucketed rain and the site became quite boggy making a mess in the van, and there is a fair fall on the sites that the a-frame was pretty much on the ground (in the Swan OB)
