If Santa was to bring me a vast decoder, is there anything in particular I need watch out for, what is the best brand, do they all do the same thing. Santa will be buying off the internet so need to make sure he knows what to look for

Go for the Satking, I had the UEC Altech and sold it when the Satking arrived, 12v from the factory, and low current draw, PVR enabled (although I haven't checked that yet), smaller, RF output (as well as HDMI, composite) more responsive remote and channel changing, nicer to look at user interface, built in Sat finder (although I still use my external meter).

Just my recommendation.

I've got the Humax 1003s 500gb ... very happy. Can record 2 programs and watch one, can series link recordings, very easy to use and menus are intuitive. I run it from a very efficient inverter that I have wired to different coloured power-points in the van (so we never get it wrong!) and when it is not being used just turn it off ... boot up time is minimal and I save 'standby' power.
