I was reading the info on the wall of the tyre on my off road Expanda and it states 'Max load on tyre 925kg at 300kp'. That means that the combined load of two tyres (single axle) is 1850Kg. But the ATM of the van is 1932Kg & the GTM is 1827Kg (ball weight is 105Kg). This shows how close the GTM is to the allowable load on the tyres (23Kg) so another reason not to exceed the legal load of the van is the tyres can not carry much more than the GTM of the van. I'll bet there is a lot of vans out there that do exceed their GTM.

On another matter, the clearance of my Hayman Reese hitch mentioned in another post apparently can be rectified by my local Jayco dealer. Rather than purchasing a longer hitch and thereby reducing my car's rear clearance, the dealer can fit a 50mm solid steel block under the tow receiver allowing the front of the van to drop by this amount.:o
The pictures show the parts concerned.

G'day Mickm512,

It probably wont be a problem on dual axles units as the load is then divided over 4 tyres but the 16' single axle vans could be heavier than mine and could easily exceed the tyre capacity. Maybe heavier duty tyres are fitted to the larger vans?

Jayco fit tyres that sail very close to the limit IMO, on mine they are still 109 rated but they used a mid quality brand tyre (firestone / bridgestone destination AT)

Personally I regretted not getting 16's have considered retro fitting them. Going to a 7" rim and using 245/70 16's. They are the standard fitment of lots of utes, get an 121+ rating with LT construction. Wider, stronger, tougher tyre, win win.

On the single axle jobs we can not afford to be complacent about tyres, Bushman blew a "trailcutter" ( Jayco std fit) on the way back from VHC on that filthy hot day.

2011 16.49-3 was fitted with Firestone AT, 112 load rating which is 1025kg, rims stamped with 1000kg and axle load stamped 1980kg, so weak point is the axle...i also wished i upgraded to the 16in wheels and tyres, another mod to put on the list, when the rubber gets down a bit..
