Hi. I have a Toyota prado 2008 turbo diesel. I will be picking up my new 17.56.2 ob. Haved heard a few rumours and was wondering from the most experienced van travellers is an oil cooler the best thing to do for a Prado trans (auto). Any information appreciated. I love my prado and always service it every 5000km, last thing i want is to blow the trans. Have been told prados are no good for towing but i see them everywhere

it may be good insurance to get one fitted, (if not already, not sure) then you have piece of mind.

Interesting question, I have just fitted one in preparation for picking up my 14.4.4.

I found that with my camper trailer on it was not uncommon to reach torque converter temps in excess of 110 deg and auto trans temps of 100. Not something you want.

On top of that you might be aware that Toyota claim that the auto trans fluid is good for the life of the vehicle.

So IMO it's worth adding the cooler and changing the fluid. Do you have a scan gauge? Great way to monitor trans temps.

cheers Capt gadget. Looks ideal, saves trying to find a spot to put in an extra temp sensor when it already has one. Wonder if you can get them in Australia

I had a 2008 deisel hilux with my 17.56.2. I found that the transmission warning light would come on a lot. Most trips actually. It was a worry. I would suggest the oil cooler.

Same issue with the trans light on our Hilux so I fitted a cooler, fairly easy job.

If it doesnt have a factory oil cooler then definately fit one for peace of mind really, Should also change the fluid if towing a lot.

Hey @seanparky
My father in law has a 2008 Diesel Prado. Great for towing. He does also have an auto transmission cooler fitted. Easy to install and not an expensive exercise. If you get one, just make sure you measure it as the larger ones don't fit but the small one is very capable for the job. In his experience since fitting the cooler (and i have also read this on prado point) the temps of the car when first starting tend to actually run very low, take ages to come up to operating temp. It does sometimes actually cause a rough idle.

Cheers

Re the scan gauge I got mine from ample outdoors, good service and quick delivery. Has a range of functions, that I like to use, but that's a whole other thread!

It has a function called x gauge, where you need to enter a code, and it picks up both torque converter temp and trans temp.
I mounted the cooler on Sunday, and am seeing an auto trans specialist tomorrow to flush the fluid and replace with fresh fluid.
