Strahan Holiday Park

http://www.strahanholidaypark.com.au/

there are two caravan parks in Strahan, with two listings and two phone numbers. Really, they are run by the same people and (I'm told) you get put in which ever one they decide. One is a big open area with loop road - a 'traditional' council type park. The other is more a cabin park with around 30 van spots along the single road in/out, but more heavily treed and separation between spots.

We had the nicer of the two :)

The spots were a nice size and well sheltered. Ours was the second in from the main road through Strahan, but traffic in/out of the park was un noticed. There is uncover bbqs, but no rec room as such. There is a laundry, but back out on the main road, and closes at 8pm sharp (make sure you retrieve your clothes!). It is pet friendly, but strictly no campfires (the site next to us had one each night tho without issue). $45 per night, plus another $7 per kid.

The downside is the amenities there. They are individual unisex rooms containing toilet, basin and shower. Pleasant enough I suppose, but only four of them for the 30 odd spaces. There was always a wait and they were FILTHY by the time you got to use them!! As it was cold and wet the whole time we were there, it wasn't comfortable to be just standing around waiting for someone to finish up. A few more would be a really good thing. (remember we went without the toilet/shower in the van:))

I didn't take any pics, so just the web site ones sorry….

On the Straydingo rating system (of which there really is no system - just what I feel like at the time) 3.5/5 (4.5/5 if they put more dunnys in!)

Strachan is a lovely spot, but be prepared - it rains 250 days of the year. We were there in the height of summer, and at one point I looked at my phone to see "currently 9.4deg, feels like 2.7deg". Yep, yep, yep. I've never worn two jumpers before, nor has the missus bought thick gloves in Summer……

There's not a lot in town, but they do have the Macquarie River cruises and the play "the ship that never was" which are must dos. We'd done both before, and happily did them again! The train line opened up again the day we arrived after being in hiatus for 12-18 months while the government decided if they would continue funding. In hindsight, I'd like to have done that too. Queenstown is only 40 minutes away. We did a sort of custom tour via the Lake Margaret Hydro and Lt Lyell Copper mine. Just us and the guide (I hate to say the name escapes me, but he used to work for the mine and knew his stuff) . A Fantastic 4 hours (was s'pose to be 3) and so well priced http://www.queenstownheritagetours.com/Home_Page.php

I'm not normally one to do a bit of advertising in the park reviews….but hey, they're worth it.
