Hello everybody.

First time joining a forum and first time owning an Expanda. We previously owned a Jayco Freedom (and loved it) but had to sell due to havin the wrong ratio of bodies to beds. We have just purchased a 2008 Expanda Outback 16.49.3 (did I get that right - it has bunk beds..) with the hard lids. The original owners bought it new and hardly used it. Unfortunately they left it out in the weather with no cover, so it has some fading / perishing. I've ordered some new decals and plastics. Going to start scrubbing with the fibreglass polish soon.

Unfortuantely I didn't really do any research before buying an Expanda - I just liked the concept - so I still don't really know my way around it yet. I have to get it sorted before our first trip next month. I hope somebody may be able to help me out with my first question (one of many, I'm sure). When the bed is opened there are two plastic coated steel cables on either side, going from the body to the base of the bed. Are these supposed to be taught or slack? It appears the base is currently supported by the canvas (?) body only. This appear to have resulted in the top corners of the canvas coming out of the channels in the body. Without body weight on the bed, the cables are slack. There does appear to be diffirent postions for them to be located on the body, so I assume they can be tightened.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to tell me if I ask questions in the wrong area of the forum - it's all new to me.

Blueoval - Welcome to the site.

I can tell you that the cables should be tight. It is the cables which support the bed and the canvas keeps the weather out.

Once you sort it out you will find the van fantastic. Just remember that like all canvas when it gets wet that if anything is resting against the canvas, water will seep through. Plenty of posts here on waterproof screens if you want.

Welcome Blueoval, sound like a Ford man. .:car: As BoD said, the cables support the bed and the canvas keeps the water out, it cannot carry weight.

Thanks one and all for your responses. Yes chartrock, blue blood does runeth in these veins. It's not the tow car though - just a toy that sits in the shed providing a home for spiders. I will post a pic when I work out how. Does the image have to be reduced to a certain size? I only have one pic at the moment, being that we stuck it in the shed straight after picking it up.

From your feedback it appears the previous owners may not have realised the cables need to support the base. They mentioned that the canvas often pulled out of the channels at the top corners. Time to make some adjustments I guess. Anybody know if there is a procedure that needs to be followed?

Hey Jenny, is there a WA chapter? How many vans? Keep me informed re the proposed weekend away.

Hi Bluey and welcome.

At the top of the cable should be it's connecting plate with 4 (?) holes in it. (My cable is currently in hole #3 from the top). You should simply be able to release the bolt holding the cable and move it up a hole. Get the van level first, and then use the level on the bed ends to make sure they are horizontal. You may need someone else to help support it while doing it to make it a bit easier and give some slack in the cable.
It shouldn't happen easily, but the cables can stretch and need adjusting, but not certainly not regularly.
