Just did a trip to Bunbury return from Perth. Towing a 16.49-3 Expanda travelling at 100km/h (speed limit) with car and caravan fully loaded. Burned 13.2l/100km of diesel. Very happy just wish they would increase tow limit as the engine and vehicle is more than capable of towing 3T+.

Yes mate i agree but my prado only just weighs 2500kgs if that so i could never tow 3 t with it evan though it could we have to bye 200s oh yea !!

And....boringly....I'd rather stick within the manufacturers' limits.

I'd hate to push their stated weights too much as you never know when you just might void your insurance, and I hate to create an avoidable problem.

Just for interest, we're currently away and heading north so pushing uphill, they tell me. Our current litres per 100 kms is surprisingly lower than we've measured before. Just under 14l/ 100kms, unlike last year when we headed south in the 16.49.3 and the fuel averaged at about 16. The current van is about the same weight as the 16.49.3.

Maybe it's the accuracy of the EDS I fitted, unlike my app calculations used previously.

Whatever it is, I'm happy.

The EDS is there as the Patrol doesn't pretend to be modern ....no onboard display for temp, fuel efficiency etc...it just chugs on doing its workhorse best.

Climax Suspension has a kit upgrading the suspension on a 150 series Prado that increases the towing capacity legally to 3.0t. Lovells have a GVM upgarde and are currently working on a towing upgrade as well. I would get a kit fitted to increase its capacity.

By parents did that for their prado and now tows their 3.0t van legally. Insurance is covered so long as it is legal so no issue there as well. The only concern would be manufacturers warranty if you need to claim against it, but I would run the risk.

The car is made to tow 3.0t elsewhere in the world, not just Australia.

I have 150 Prado 3l diesel and tow a 14.44.5 out back..in ideal conditions get under 13 l per 100km but usually a bit under 14 unless on unsealed or hilly areas.My main problem is keeping it in 5th ...am lucky to do 90kph ..always wants to drop out of overdrive ..unless going downhill!! Often can't use cruise control.
Any tips from Prado auto owners?

I have a 2014 Prado and a 16.49.1 and have travelled to Busselton many times; diesel usage is around 14l/100Kms especially heading south - always seem to be heading into the wind. Coming home usually 12l/100Kms - maybe I have lighten the return load with the beer drunk whilst away?
General advice including Toyota is not to tow in D, although many do.
