I have recently upgraded from outback eagle to a 16:49:4 outback which we love, only problemis that it sits much lower than the Eagle, the Eagle sat nice and level with the Patrol which has a 50mm EFS lift.
Having just completed a big trip up the Oodnadatta the extra ball weight really weighed down the Patrol in the ass end.
So, after reading info online about underslung I am more confused than ever... Correct? Safe? I called Hardings who do a removal of suspension, add a raising beam then re attach the spring hangers and suspension which seems to not change much of the "ergonomics" but was quoted $1200-$1400 which is out of my price range.
Whilst I know I can drop the tow ball to level I want the extra height as we did drag the rear bar on more than one occasion when heading in to look at Lake Ayre and we prefer the "outback" bush camps that require a little bit more heightbat times.
Any help here would really be appreciated.
Thanks

I did a spring over on my 16/49/3 outback, but found it lifted it to much , height of axle 55mm and height of leaf pack 65mm ,120mm total , wasn't bad but was to much , shocks didn't reach ,annex to short.
By fabricating longer spring hangers and bigger tyres I got about 60mm lift , shocks fit , then put hitch on top of drawbar , works well, doesn't seem to bounce around as much with the bigger rubber, also got two extra leafs put in springs ,8 to 10 leafs to handle the weight better.if anyone's got the time load you van and look at spring hangers they actually hit the mount when traveling , I've seen this on other expandas as well ?

Hey MF,

That looks great, I bet travel height is no worry at all now.

I just noticed you have the awning light also fitted to the offside! Do you use it often?

Jayco Prestige in Geelong did it and so far the dropdown legs have been long enough to reach all sites

Thanks for the response, I looked at he outback brochure I have and that shows the van on the front it the height of yours? I will speak to Page brothers and see if they can do it.
Cheers

Hi folks, not sure what year brochure you have but in the 2012 brochure on page 11 for outback expandas it reads, and i quote. --- "• Underslung axle (tandem axle only)"

Yes as does mine but the image shows a van higher than what mine seems to be? I will follow up with Page Brothers.
Thanks

True that. - Let us know how you go cause I'd like to get mine done as well - My prado isnt even lifted yet and the Ball seems to be a little high for the expanda as it is.

Hi Paul
Let me get this straight, is yours an outback but not underslung?
I thought all the OBs were underslung...?

Do others have OB's that are not?

It would seem that the single axel are not and the double are yet the picture of the single in the brochure sits much higher than ours, but on closer eading of the brochure it does in small print of the etra's available state that its doubles only so my fault for not ready it closely enough!
i did however ask "are the expanda outbacks the same height as my Eagle outback" and was told yes... i think that they were all underslung in the past perhaps the rep at page brothers was anaware that it had been changes? not sure but i have a patrol with a 50mm lift and its a real issue will a huge ball weight and drag now so iwil have to get it sorted one way or another.

I think the OB dual axles are underslung because the stub is welded on top of the axle, otherwise they would probably sit too low! However my brother inlaws old eagle was underslung from factory, they seem to be heaps higher than the pop tops....go figure!
