:) Hello all

I was wondering if someone can help me with some advice on a booster or arial to suit a IPhone 4?
If possible what do I have to buy and what is the best way to improve reception in the bush when free camping?

Hello
I have one of these (AN1600) http://www.zcg.com.au/marine_antennas_mobile_phone.htm
antennas mounted like
3gAerial.jpg

and then a patch lead https://telcoantennas.com.au/site/passive-patch-lead-apple-iphone-5

It works well ... not as well I presume as a direct aerial port on the phone but much better than without.
cheers

Hey all;)

Hi Skip, The phone needs to have an external antenna port, the other option is to get a cheap pre-paid phone with an external port.
Looks like I am going to try a few options.
I have a old USB Modem with a Arial input and also a prepaid phone with a Arial input as well. I was trying to get away with just using the Ipphone but if the patch does not work I will just have too use the old phone or USB modem instead. Cheers Stone Stomper

I think I will try the patch for sure and also give that Arial a go too. The web site for the Arail is great too with lots of info. Thanks Bugeye

Hi skippy, how did you go with your comms setup?

I have the Strike Smoothtalker fitted cradle - with pass thru cables option for both iPhone 4 & 5 (has built in antenna receiver and fme antenna connection). http://www.thfcomms.com.au/iPhone-cradle.html by far, if not, the one of the best cradles if you want to use your iPhone 4.

I use RFI CD2195 (6.5dB) or CD2197 (7.5dB) cellular antennas (http://www.rfiwireless.com.au/mobile-antennas/cellular-mobile/cellular-ground-independent.html) which also work great on 3G modems and 4G depending where u are. I can only vouch for QLD...

Using this setup definitely gets better reception with Telstra (and Optus where available...) for data and voice calls BUT when your out of range your out of range... If you are on the fringes of reception it def helps as the phone doesn't drop out and same goes for when driving around - you get bugger all drop outs and lost conversations.

I have an antenna mounted on the tug (and work car) and second antenna in the Expanda (not sure where to mount or if will at all because being portable allows me to zip tie it to an extendable pole or walk up the nearest hill if I need to...).

I then shift the cradle between the car and van when needed and can swap between iPhone 4 cradle, iPhone 5 cradle or modem patch lead. Phone car chargers plug straight in when needed - as do ear phones or audio out cable (with the pass thru cradle model).

The wifi modem + patch lead + antenna works a treat on the highway as kids and wife get to use their phones and iPads... Can even stream radio stations for most sections of the Bruce Hwy with out loosing it.

Let me know if you want to see photos of the gear have for the above setup.:)

Sounds good Ligedy, I'm waiting for my Optus plan to run out at the start of September to switch over to Telstra with an ipnone5 before I get to serious but the smoothtalker cradle is the one I was looking at so am pleased to hear it working well.
