Well, I've been a bad boy, at least as far as the bank account goes.

While we have been patiently waiting for the delivery of our Starcraft Outback 1758-1, my mind has wandered about towing it with our about to turn 10yo Rodeo 4x4 Dualcab. Although this has been a fantastic and ultra reliable beast over the last 8 years of ownership, little voices in the back of my mind have kept saying all the what if's, you know, what if we are in the middle of nowhere and the transmission craps out, what if when we are dragging 2+tons up that range and the engine overheats, what if ..................and so on
Now I have every confidence in nothing being unfixable for the price, but the destruction of valuable time away let alone having the what if's in the back of your mind every trip sort of takes the shine off it.

The other pressing reason is with a growing family of 5, two parents, 3 children ranging from 17 down to 6months and especially now the smallest has changed from a capsule to forward facing seat, the back seat real estate and general cabin space is, lets face it...............crap, at best we have a two and a half space rear seat and that's being generous.

So with a bit of research and looking at options for something to last the next 10 years that would perform all it is needed too, week day school taxi, shopping trolley, comfortable city car and minimal restricted access, easy access to the cabin and boot, capable tow tug with 2.5 tonne, capable outback tourer and 4wd (no more rock hopping and mud pits for me) reasonably economical and good range of aftermarket accessories and a following of enthusiasts for when you really need to know how to fix things.

In the end the choice became very simple, dual cab ute's although flexible and certainly up to the task had a few X's beside them, price to fit out and again the cabin space and second row access. Then came the two Toyota options, Prado certainly ticked alot of our requirements but a bit short on cargo space, pretty maxed out at our towing load and then the price. Lastly the mighty 200 series, yes for everything, but big in the shopping centers, thirsty, and ridiculous $$$$.

I also quickly thought about Nissans offerings, Y61 patrol solid and proven but low on power too truck like around town, the ugly as sin Y62, not sure what end should be the front, but again not really right for us, Pathfinder don't even go there I said 4wd remember.

So in the end we ended up choosing a MY16 Pajero GLX demo, got a great deal and it has so much for such a reasonable price, it's a proven platform although maybe not up to date with the latest technologies in engines and drive train it is still light years ahead of the old Deo.

We loved our old Rodeo and it will be sadly missed but we are looking forward to many great times in the new Paj.

So we are expecting a big couple of weeks shortly and I'm more excited than a teenager with two di&#*

first thing first @JS4910

get the rear suspension upgraded and air bags fitted
I know its a 2016 - so the suspension should not be shagged, but, once done - you never have to re-visit it again

Yes it is on the list once we take delivery, I have been spying on the Paj Club forum as to what breed I go with and how hard a rear spring so there is still a bit more thought to go into that yet although I'm leaning towards the Lovells/Bilstien combo's.

It will come out of the dealers with the Redarc Tow Pro Elite, factory towbar, spare wheel lift and ARB deluxe bullbar, suspension, dual batteries and snorkel will soon follow once I get over the initial shock of outlaying over $80K in a few short weeks.......................:-O

The Pajero forum is a great place to learn from, I'm on my second Paj and I reckon value for money spent you cant fault them. As already has been said get your suspension upgraded (front and rear) and you will never look back, I put EFS gear under my current rig and H/P Firestone air bags in the rear.

I don't have a bull bar a probably wont put one on this rig so out of the three options available soft medium and hard I went with the soft and a 40mm lift, this transformed the vehicles ride from ok to brilliant.

As for towing my Expanda fully loaded is somewhere between 200-230kg ball weight and weighs 2t, we normally have a fully loaded 80lt esky in the rear of the Paj along with tables, chairs, back up cartons of beer, bourbon, water and soft drinks a boat loader and a tinny on the roof and with 20-25psi in the bags (they can take up to 60psi) and a WDH the tug wouldn't sag much more than 5mm.

Congrats on the the dual purchase, you won't go wrong with the Pajero, can't add much more to what's already been said other than its recommend to tow in 4h and 4gear it will pull up hill/down dale all day long, if you don't need the 3rd row seats I recommend you remove them, saves a lot of weight and gives added storage under the floor.

A Pajero is a nice tow vehicle. We found air bags were very useful and usually ran them at around 15 to 20psi (very dependant caravan). Also in both our Pajero's we upgraded the rear springs and shocks (Lovell springs and Bilstein shocks). A very useful trick is to tow in 4WD High range (not low range) the Pajero "selectmatic" gear box makes this easy and you do not loose much economy, but will significantly reduce rear tyre wear and the caravan will tow a lot better.
There should be a little card on the drivers visor that tells you this, also towing anything over 1300kg Mitsibishi recommend a WDH.
Also ECB make a nice little colour coded alloy bull bar (pipe type) for the Pajero, have had a Smartbar and and ECB on different Pajero's, they were both good, steel is a bit heavy for the front of the Pajero and steel bull bar will impact on handling and economy.

Dad has one on his Ducato Motorhome and hit a steer in the front P/S corner at Tennant Creek last year, it survived and provided much better protection than I thought it would, although the insurance assessor wrote off the bat as the mounts had deformed and wouldn't meet airbag requirements.

Me I'll stick with steel, for me the extra protection is worth the small increase in fuel usage.

Nice choice @JS4910 we've been very happy with out paj over the past few years. There isn't much that hasn't been done to our paj that can be done and yes the paj forum is great help. Highly recommend whateva @achjimmy did to our pajero's suspension (who we bought it off). He towed a van with it before we bought it and it tow's our jayco very well as a result of what he settled on with suspension setup (he tried some different combo's). He will be able to confirm, but im pretty sure its the bilstein shock/lovells spring combo and polyair air bags in the back.

Yeah I went efs with bilstiens. Efs is actually kings rebranded and the fronts collapsed so I replaced them with Lovell's. The ride with front Lovell's improved immensely. But I always liked the efs/Kings rears cause they were progressive rate . I added airbags cause that was the trend but never really used them just left 5psi in them. Do you use them @spiderpig

Yeah run the bags at 20psi when towing our van, otherwise drop them to 5psi. Dunno if its cause we have a single axle van with a reasonable ball weight (with no WDH), but find it helps keep everything more stable and the front wheels on the ground when driving the more windy/bumpy country roads :)

1) it is only money

2) they make money round - so you can spread it around

My Dad used to say that the round stuff was made round to go around, but the flat stuff was made flat to stack.
So think carefully of how much of each you can afford
I'm stuffed if I can stack much, for similar reasons as the OP started this post

Seat Covers and Sandgrabber mats and window tint in the next week or so, work permitting and that will be it for a while as we'll also have the new van to play with in a couple of weeks if Jayco keep their end of the bargain.

Ordered the full set of MSA seat covers today and full set of Sandgrabba mats, even though Mitsubishi was kind enough to supply the vehicle with factory carpet mats, like the seat situation they wont cut the mustard once the filth monsters are let loose in the back.

It was a quick way to blow $1300, lets hope the quality is matched to the price tag and I'll still be smiling about them in 5yrs time
