With the new J35 BMS in Jayco’s do they still fit an external solar regulator or context the panels direct to the BMS?

Check on which j35 bms you have one has a 30 amp solar regular built in you can tell by looking if there is terminals on for solar. J35a doesn’t have solar j35b does but just double check with setec.

Cool thanks I was just curious what Jayco did on the outbacks with solar

Hi @achjimmy as Smash said, our new 2018 19.61-3 OB came with the j35b which has the solar input direct on the unit. No separate regulator.
I have 2017 19.61-3 OB im happy with this because I have the old setec unit so I can run a 50amp regulator and run 4x160watt panels.

We have a 2017 18.58-2 with the J-Hub panel, ours is a J35C. Our 150W roof top panel runs at 18V, and our additional 200W folding external panel is the same voltage so it can piggy back into the same solar inputs (ie, into the built in regulator), however, if it was a different voltage, I would just go via the regulator on the back of my folding panel into the 12V Aux Power In connection. Voltages should be written on the back of your roof top panel if you wanted to confirm and match to another one.

Couldn’t you just remove the solar from the J35 and feed it to a reg then direct to battery ?

Yes and no. Yes you theoretically can and it won't blow anything up, however it will cause issues with tracking the power drain etc on the control panel. The J35 basically acts as a shunt and tracks how much instant power draw is occurring and gives an accurate reading on how much power is left. Best for all ins and outs to go via the J35 otherwise it loses track.

Ahh okay so they don’t use a separate shunt on the battery now like the drifter did ?

Interesting so 2x 150 panels is effectively the max for the J35, wonder what they do with the adventurer, it has 3 panels.
