I used to have one on my 17.56 I thought it was a great idea but found that it wouldn't stay on even on our rough roads. Now I use a isolator in the car.

Hi...just curious and I'm probably slow but the purpose of the fridge switch is, I assume, to cut off power from the car when stopped?

I'm now worried that technology has passed me by in yet another area.

We had a fridge switch on an old van years ago which we had to remember to turn off when we stopped. Sometimes, we didn't.

(our setup: fridge power from car when travelling, redark isolator on car...and I'm happy with that but wondered if there's some newfangled development in this area I've missed)

Guessing you fitted the motion sensor switch @stormpatrol ?

I fitted a low voltage cutoff switch for ours and have had no issues. Runs off the second battery and turns the fridge off when the battery gets down to 11.5 volts. Saves trying to remember to switch off a manual switch (Like we had setup for the previous van!!!

But my isolator should do that for me?

I can't keep up with all these developments...maybe I should read some magazines for something other than ideas for camping spots?

Sorry been away ;fridge switch is a motion sensor type; works great; you do have to set fridge up for 12 volt at first , not a big thing to do , then you go on ya trip

On two tugs now I just use a cheap marine VSR (voltage sensing relay $70) of the start battery to the ando. Also have the tugs compresser wired too it? With heavy draw stuff like fridge it pretty much switchs out within a minute of turning the tug off.

I used a relay wired direct to the starter battery on our first van in the 100 series but couldn't be bothered setting one up in the Prado so just ran decent cabling (6B&S from memory) and fitted a low voltage cutoff switch.... Most of our stops on the way are just pit stops or lunch stops and with it set to cut off at 11V's I haven't had an issue yet!

Hello, ive gone and run wiring from the car direct to the van battery so i can run the fridge on short stops and also power up the van battery .This seems the best way so i can have the tug 2x130a/h and the van battery running the fridge and i can also plug in a solar panel to recharge all batteries when free camping but i would be running the fridge on gas while on free camping i havnt got a cutout switch in line , waiting to try this out soon to see how long it all lasts.

Can't see any need to run the fridge on 12v when stopped as it doesn't do very much other than burn up a lot of stored power, doesn't do a lot when running off the alternator for that matter. Unless of course it's a compressor fridge.

As an update I spent $20 on a 30 amp relay which I plumbed to an ignition "on" circuit and now my main battery feed to rear of ute and van is only active when engine running, just in case, thought of running the van off the aux but this way was easier.
