Hi andrew,
We have a 16.49.4 outback which we tow with an 05 prado.
I know its there but t it tows well and has no problems at all.
Steep hills it drops down a bit but I guess we all do.
We have done plenty of dirt with ours too across the Pilbara and Murchison and again no issues.
Will

Nissan Patrol....we've done lots of kms on both dirt and blacktop and no issues, except thd usual challenges on steep climbs.

Check the specs for both vehicle and van before you decide....its very easy to get it wrong.

Don't be misled by the "tows 3500 kgs" van is 2000 kgs so it must be right for the job....it may not be if you don't take all the weights into consideration.

Our van is just on 2000kgs and the car is rated to tow 3500 with a max tow ball of 350kgs but we are very close to the mark once we take all factors into consideration.....weight of passengers, Extras added to vehicle, extras added to van, actual measured tow ball weight, food, gear, water etc etc...

Getting this wrong is, in mho, the single most important safety factor for consideration and is best done before you buy.

Best wishes gor the search.

have a 100 series and a TD42 Patrol
100 does it easy, but drinks petrol like a wineo as its a V8 petrol
Patrol does it with ease, and not as thirsty as the 100

what vehicle do you already have Andrew? (@aliersch )

We currently have a 2011 Toyota Kluger AWD it has a towing weight of 2t but is a petrol engine so unsure how good it will be on the economy. We do need an eight seater so have thought about a second hand diesel Prado or Landcruiser.

Still trying to find ourselves a caravan, so will keep investigating!

@dagree used to tow his 18' with a V6 Playdoh, fuel wasnt nice compared to the diesel, but not as bad as me driving the V8 cruiser

just remember - anything you ADD to the Playdoh (or cruiser if you get) will limit your carrying capacity
bull bars, scrub bars, side steps, rear wheel carrier, roof rack etc will all eat into your GVM

have a think about the base model Playdoh as opposed to the GXL (or whatever its called) the top of the range Playdoh is 350kgs heavier than the Basic one, thats 350kgs you can use for you

not sure on the 150 playdoh, but I know the 120, with the D4D diesel has 2 tanks - 180l of fuel

BT-50, totally agree with Dobbie, consider all the things you want to take.

I did a spreadsheet with all the things I was going to add to vehicle and van to see what suited weight wise.

I got an upgrade on van to carry 450kg payload. Haven't had to for ute yet, unless i put on some more things.......

I've attached a print screen as for some reason I can't upload excel file. I can email you a copy if you want.

Great work @Clewsy

Very similar in approach to the calculator thingy i did ages ago...but much better laid out.

If buyers checked all these items, and took them into consideration before listening to sales people and advertising, we'd have a safer caravan fraternity.

(Xel files will load if you zip them first)

thanks for the tip @Dobbie,

zipped excel file attached that someone might find useful.

The other tab I was using to work out where the weight went to different axles when you use WDH, not 100% sure the maths is right on this one after watching the good video @Bushman posted and @Crusty181 commented on.

We have a 2015 16.49.1 that we towed for a year with a 2009 Kluger AWD before upgrading to a 2016 Prado GLX

Use a WDH on both and on the flat no real difference except for fuel consumption. Kluger went through the juice like no ones business.

Prado much better in the hills. We did not upgrade because of the van rather we wanted a 4wd for fun. We still have the kluger as a second car.

As long as you are happy to stop every 300km for fuel and drop speed on the inclines Kluger tows the 16.49 series just fine.
