So we bought a Hitachi 12v TV from big W.... its worked really well on 240v (apart from poor reception, but that may be the wind up aerial?) Anyway... it didn't come with a 12v CIG Socket lead, easy done, I'll buy one from fleabay.... $9 later and it turns up.. well, out free camping the other weekend, I went to put a DVD on for the better half while I enjoyed s few brews.... it melted the side out of the male CIG plug and I quickly pulled
It out before it caught fire.... what the????

What 12v lead should I be using??

We picked up a 29" TEAC from JB HiFi for the new van and also didn't come with a 12V lead. Picked one up from Jaycar for $2.95 and had the TV plugged into a 12V Jumper pack running for 4 hours with no issue.
Only thing is the lead is only 500mm long so hope it reaches the plug in the van when we get it!!

I've found it needs to run at least a two amp fuse. Anything less either blew or got warm.
I now run 5 amp fuses.

Maybe the plug end to the tv, there are a few sizes very close but not close enough. I would try Jaycar.

Hi Peter,

I know this may not help you but we bought a Kogan 22" LCD 12VDC TV for the van which also came with a 240vac/12VDC adapter. I've just checked and the ac adapter has on it input 240vac 0.9amps output 12VDC 3amps, checked the DC lead also and it has on it "Fitted with 10Amp 30mm fuse inside plug tip, unscrew tip to replace". Your probably going to need at least 3Amps, I would probably think 5Amps or better still 10Amps to be safe. In saying all of this the DC lead on ours isn't physically very thick though and I haven't noticed any heating issues thus far with it. Good luck.

sounds like that lead couldn't handle the amps that your tv wanted, i've seen cheap leads that won't blow the internal fuse but the wiring will heat up due to being undersize or a poor solder joint or even a bad fit in the 12v socket
have a look at your TV manual under specifications, should tell you there how many amps it wants, then visit jaycar or someone similar (take the TV in the car incase they want to look) and find a lead to suit, try to stay away from universal leads with interchangeable tips, some of them you can reverse the polarity on with drastic results.

Reversed polarity that would not be nice. :yuck:

Rightio! I pulled the plug apart.... it had a 10a fuse inside.... the spring behind the fuse was quite thin... it looks like it itself has heated up red hot as said by @DaveS, and melted the plastic around it. Well, I'll head to our Jaycar distributor and get s new lead :)

Cheers all!
