The Classic Hino truck with 38 seats.............magic................air wipers, such a marvelous invention....................................................................... 1975... I was cleaning up after a windy few days in Darwin then later we were sitting off the coast of Darwin ready to repel the Indonesians since we weren't allowed to go to Timor and blow them up.................. we had heaps of things that go bang too.

Jan 1975.............Darwin.....

air wipers
Is there a difference between air wipers and vacuum wipers?
I had vacuum wipers on my FJ. They stopped when you planted the foot. In those days, I was bipolar. Full accelerator or full brakes.

It was fun. Really rainy days, plant the foot to get the wheels spinning and the wipers would stop. Head out of the window to see where I was heading.
Yeah, I know now it was silly and dangerous. But what I learnt in those days has since saved my life many times over.

If I had my life over, I have always wanted to be a tourist coach driver and drive freight trains, steam, electric, or diesel.
Maybe the coach driver ambition was driven partly by the nocturnal adventures :p

take care
Mike

My mate was in Darwin for the cleanup on the Stalwart. I paid off from Stalwart at the end of '73

Landseers were good coaches. It may have been a different outcome if the boys had been allowed to go to Timor. I had a couple of mates there that were itching to push a few smug brown faces into the mud.

My last coach driving job was with Ansett

Both these photos were taken at Ceduna where I was based for 9 years

Big difference, Mike. The air wipers worked on compressed air and could be adjusted to the speed required. They didn't slow down when the vacuum dropped. I had an FB holden and had the same thing.
I had many a night travelling with very little vision when it rained.

The Hino was only thirty six foot long as we were not allowed any more into the Victorian alps or the Grampians and we did a lot of snow tours. It had 38 seats set up for touring. Beautiful coach to drive and went like the proverbial.

Air wipers could sweep at the speed of sound, take off into the next lane or just jam, but only at the most scary time......and winter around Glenn Innes totally die in the ice.

Bldg 215, actually did my helmsman ticket on it, a trip up to Cid Harbour and back.... It was then I realized I shoulda joined some other mob...

If we were in GI in refit or some sort of maintenance, we would run for cover as they would come around like an old style Press Gang to get replacements for the depot stanchions who would run to Kuttabul for the duration, if you'd had upset the Jimmy or Engineer you were a likely candidate and the I'm a steam man didn't matter I heard they thought it was a good time for some diesel experience............. luckily I was QM so they left me alone.

It wasn't very old when I was on it.............what an adventure for a 17 yr old kid.

With the names Ayers Rock and Mt Olga over the gate, you must be old. :boink:

There you go Chartrock. Crusty is as old as me.
Great times were had around that rock. All a good giggle until you got ten points of rain.......................coaches were not that good in wet.

Would have been a bit squeezy , two of us trying to get through that gate Crusty

My first draft to 215 was to the Fleet Maintenance Section. It was real cushy. No watchkeeping and only really did anything when we were on exercises.
I went back later as a Kellick on ship's staff.

So, was that where the name Maxie Moo Moo was first used and then passed on recently to a real pup?
Or is there a Maxie Moo Moo, and a Maxie Moo Moo Too? :behindsofa::bolt:

take care
Mike
Although the Princess bangs on desperately (and annoyingly) pining for another replica Maxie Moo Moo to join her wolf pack, Maxie Moo Moo remains a one off .... thus far. Maxi Moo Moo just arrived one day in spite of my absolute prohibition, so that said I wholely expect that one day Ill come home and there be another one to greet me

I need to give a plug to a company called Solar RV. They are in Melbourne https://www.solar4rvs.com.au/
Late last Thursday night 24/09/20, I ordered an 40amp Enerdrive Battery Charger from their online store.
Less than four full days (two of those days being the weekend) I had it delivered to my house in Adelaide. Delivered at 0930 on the 28th.
I am very happy with that and it beats the hell out of the other company I have been dealing with where I had to wait over two weeks for a delivery.
Their prices seem reasonable too
